Once their own cities start getting bombed, their resistance to pain would be quite different.

There was the War of Independence, for starters. Coastal towns were bombarded navally too, by both sides.

Then there was the Civil War, a few battles of the US-Mexico war when Texas was annexed.

Granted though, I suppose nothing in the era of aerial warfare and consequent massive ordinance deployment.
