Egypt, China discuss cooperation to double value of currency swap agreement

CAIRO – 12 March 2026: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Thursday the desire to double the value of the currency swap agreement.

During a phone call, Abdelatty said that Egypt had issued $500 million in Chinese bonds, expressing hope of increasing their value in the future and strengthening cooperation with the China Development Bank to provide more foreign currency.

In October 2023, Egypt and China signed a debt swap agreement for development. Egypt is the first country to sign a debt swap agreement with China International Development Cooperation Agency, aiming to diversifying financing mechanisms through innovative instruments, said the former Minister of International Cooperation Rania El Mashat.

Egypt contracts to purchase production from Cyprus' Aphrodite gas field for 15 years
Egypt signed an agreement with Cyprus guaranteeing the supply of natural gas from the Aphrodite offshore field for a period of 15 years, with a clause allowing the extension of the period for an additional five years. The agreement comes within the framework of a clear direction to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy and secure stable sources of supplies during the coming period.
Details of the terms memorandum between “Newmed Energy” and “EGAS”

Neomed Energy, the partner in developing the Cyprus field, announced the signing of a binding memorandum of terms stipulating the sale of all recoverable quantities from the Aphrodite field to the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). Under this arrangement, Egypt becomes the primary destination for the field’s production.

The total reserves of the Aphrodite field amount to about 3.6 trillion cubic feet, with Egypt liquefying the gas inside the Idku and Damietta complexes and re-exporting it in the form of liquefied natural gas as part of a plan to purchase the production of the eastern Mediterranean fields in Cyprus, Israel and Greece and liquefy and re-export it, benefiting from it being the only country in the region that possesses liquefaction plants.

The deal is a mutual gain, but it is also evidence that energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean is now managed through alliances and shared infrastructure rather than relying on each country alone. Most importantly, the real value of the agreement lies not only in its size, but also in the fact that it links Cypriot production, Egyptian processing, and potential re-export, meaning that it integrates the links of the energy chain into one model. It strengthens Egypt's role as a regional gas hub, gives Cyprus a guaranteed outlet for marketing Aphrodite, and confirms that the Eastern Mediterranean is moving towards long-term energy partnerships rather than transit deals
