Indian Air Force News and Discussions ll

Ah! Was just thinking April was quiet for the Clown Show. SU-30MKI fleet is in desperate condition, the 12 extra planes they "ordered" 4 years ago have not turned up and the "super upgrade" is nowhere to be seen.

As I said last year, due to age these planes will soon be the new MIG-21s of IAF....

They are desperate for Rafael's, India seems to have a large airforce that's just seems to have numbers for the sake of number

I think the IAF is desperate for as many Rafael's it can get and for the french to give them a idea of how to fly them and what strategy might be fruitful

Calm down.
An indian calling our forum is a bit rich.
You call it a non event. We will call it another embarrassment
The fact that these venomous types have to create accounts, log in here, be banned upon banned and still be want to show up - the obsession with some validation from wanting to be in some positive light here is beyond cultism or irrational behavior.

The first image shows a Mig-29
So if that was incorrect then it was a MKi - and if it did hit as Indians are claiming the arrestor barrier then it needed to do so then the 8000ft runway which is enough for a fully loaded A321 to use aerodynamic braking and reverse thrust to stop in case of brake failure.

Now, this means whatever IAF aircraft it was was unable to stop within all of that and had to end up taking the barrier at the end and based on the airport stop seems it ran off the runway as well.

This means not only did it have brake faults but also failure of braking parachute AND landed well ahead of ideal landing conditions.

Not even a crash.
Pune airport confirms it was just landing gear issue which caused it get stuck in middle of runway.
Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke said, “A fighter aircraft experienced an undercarriage failure after it had a hard landing around 10.25pm, resulting in blockage of the runway. It is currently positioned in the middle of the runway. Efforts are underway to move it to the taxiway. According to the IAF ATC, it will take 4-5 hours to clear the runway as cranes and heavy machinery have been deployed.”

Well this is the issue, due to the massive delay in MRCA, the rest of the fleet has continued to age and now needs replacing. When MRCA was first floated MIG-21s were "just" 40 years old, by the time they retired many were 60 years old and MRCA was needed. MIG-21s were retired and just 36 Rafales purchased (no 28-32 approx thanks to No 15 Sqd PAF). As a result of this IAF Sqd numbers went down.

Issue is no longer the MIG-21 fleet. It is now literally every other type. The SU-30MKI fleet is the youngest but is now 30 years old with no upgrades.

Jaguar fleet is 50 years old, MIG-29 fleet is 40 years old as is Mirage 2000 fleets but these have upgrades (but no AESA or modern BVR missiles). See the issue?

Jag, MIG-29 and Mirage 2000 fleets are around 220 aircraft combined, MIG-21s were around 120 aircraft. So in total there is an urgent need to replace around 340 aircraft.

114 Radales (if they come) is only a third of what is actually needed. If they do end up coming in 10 years, SU-30MKI fleet will be 40 years old with no ugrades. That is another 260 planes

Total result is in next 10-15 years IAF has obsolence issue with 600 fighter jets.

Tejas was supposed to come to the rescue and failed. Rafale was supposed to help but order was too small and PAF made it smaller....

Credit to IAF CAS's in the past around 20 years ago like Tipnis, Krishnaswarmy and Tyagi all alerted politicians to the fact that in 20 years the fleet would face massive block obsolesence unless IAF started making Tejas quickly or they built more fighters under lisence. No one listened to them and after their tenures most IAF chiefs have been political yes men, just reassuring people everything will be OK and keeping ruling party happy.

Now the day past IAF chiefs warned about has come. To make matters even worse, no one else flies the Jaguar and most nations have retired the MIG-29, so spares will incresingly mean cannabalisation of the fleet. The Ukraine war also means much Russian support for any SU-30 upgrade will be slow or non existent.

Long story short, IAF is f**ked for fighters for the next 10-25 years until new planes arrive and/or SU-30MKI upgrade is implemented.

Love the fact they immediately now the damage is fixable even before inspecting the plane prperly, that is how fragile their mindset is about their fleet these days
What ever pleases them. This Shiv Aroor guy claimed 2 JF-17s shot down and he is going to visit the crash sites in Kashmir. Never heard from him again 😕
