no doubt taking U.S. diplomats prisoner was an extremely reckless act. the problem with the blame game is that each side can point to something earlier, e.g. was the 1953 coup not an act of war?
regardless, even without the hostage crisis I am inclined to think the US would impose sanctions on Iran/Iranians. the US refuses to tolerate any openly anti-US world order regime
Sure I never said it was fair. Americans are actively arming terrorist groups against Turkey. Should we storm incirlik and take their troops prisoner?
The thing about escalations is, you never know how mild or extreme your opponent may react.
Only major military engagement I can recall is Operation Praying mantis. Even there the Americans were content with sinking an Iranian frigate and some auxiliary ships then they stopped. They probably could've done much more.
Restraint is the name of the game and actually Iranians are usually pretty good at this. The aftermath of the Suleimani assassination was managed rather well. But since then, the temperatures are rising.
