JF-17 - Updates, News & Discussion

It is interesting(odd) to me that they included the empty pylons on that plane ? A cleaner jet without them would perform better with less weight to carry.
Depends on percentage of impact and time it takes to add/remove pylons. It’s actually smart to leave the jet configuration that way so its ready for any mission

Yesterday (May 7), several national Chinese media outlets were invited to visit the headquarters of CAC and the 611 Institute.

The following is the official news report:

It is worth noting:
The JF-17 fighter in the photo is in green livery.
This indicates that the 611 Institute is still carrying out the upgrade work on the JF-17.

Will it be re-engined with the 11-ton-thrust WS-19?
WS-21, @Michael has already confirmed, IIRC.
From a technical perspective, the WS-19 engine cannot be used for the JF-17 series fighter jets.

From a political perspective, the WS-19 engine is not exported. At least for now, its export is not allowed.

Regarding the combination of the WS-19 engine and the JF-17 series fighter jets, the technical issues are very serious, far greater than the political issues.

There are two Chinese terms that I don't know how to translate. You can figure it out yourselves.

飞发一体化 and 集成热管理.

Just these two items are enough to completely prevent the WS-19 engine from being integrated with the JF-17 series fighter aircraft. Unless CAC is really willing to develop a stealth version of the JF-17.

Last Block 1 JF-17 was produced in 2013. Do we know for sure that they were all converted to block 2 ? Any source or notification or press conference confirming that all Block 1 are already converted to Block 2 or 3 ?

Iirc not all but some were upgraded to blk 2 standard. Planned upgrade of entire fleet to blk 3 standard is still not confirmed yet

It won't happen, some of the older airframes are already approaching the end of their lifecycle, unless a SLEP is done it won't be much use upgrading them now, although we will probably see the newer 30-40 odd block 2s being upgraded.

Total number Block-1 built = 50.
Source:
"The Pakistan Air Force purchased the first batch of 50 Xiaolong fighters, of which 8 were manufactured in China and 42 were assembled by the Pakistani side, known as JF-17 Block1, all of which used Chinese on-board avionautics and weapons, and were delivered in early 2012"

Total number converted to Block-2 50.

Crux: PAF has no more JFs Block-1 in their fleet , only 2s & 3s.

I think people underestimate the lifespan of the blk 1s. Yes the airframe is not good at all and designed for only 20-25 years service but we have kept similar lifespan mirages in service for 60 years now and jf-17 is platform we designed and built and have full knowledge on. I dont think it will be that hard or costly to extend service via SLEP or otherwise. I dont think its a good idea or realisticaly possible to upgrade them to full blk 3 standard but imo blk 1 airframes will remain in service till mid 2030s atleast out of pure neccesity

One thing to note is that at Ideas 2024 a PAF official gave a 4-5 year timeline for the first flight of the block 4
