What did the supposedly insular Japanese ever do to earn this coordinated outrage on this thread? Hard to escape the feeling that a radically different culture existing successfully is what actually irritates people here.
Some kind of inferiority complex bubbling up if people are wasting time pointing at a country that isn't even theirs.
A lot of what happened simply came down to money.
Somebody saw a way of making money and the rest was history.
The anime/manga craze really took off due to some guy liking popular US "wide eye" comic book art style craze and so he started doing it in Japan and it also became successful. If money is to be made then somebody will try it.
Plus early TV shows (to make money) were also targeting selling to Western audiences and thus that had a huge influence on their art style. They weren't targeting people in Africa/Central Asia.
1960's
AstroBoy
Speed Racer - which was wildly successful..so they had a money making art style..so if it ain't broken don't fix it. The character "looks" stuck for subsequent shows.
Compare the above intro to Le Mans (note the cars banging into each other)
