Sounds like a plan! I did something similar way back in the 90s in a very old small car. If I recall correctly, it was a Pontiac T-1000 or something like that. I stayed in cheap hotels or KOA camping grounds. I drove from South Carolina to the Old Faithful in Yellow Stone and also went to the Dinosaur NP--it was dead quiet there then. I don't remember much of that trip now.
Since you mentioned me in your OP about RV advice, I'd say I am probably the wrong guy to ask because I am too lazy to manage any RV. I had one experience: A Class B motorhome which I bought through Ebay from Pittsburg in 2008. It was basically a Ford F-150 (or Ford something biggy engine!) and ran smoothly when wife and I drove that a good 400+ miles home. It had an AC, a shower/little tub, battery hookup place. It had folding seats in back to convert to bed. I believe it was a fully self-contained RV. But I could not figure things out and after just one overnight trip to the beach, it just stayed home for a year and no body was buying that. I put it on Ebay and finally an old man from NY came and bought for $5000; I had paid $8000 for it just a year before!
In hindsight, I should have kept it. I didn't need the money. If anything, the motorhome could be a fun backyard camping place and a guest house. We live on a large secluded thickly wood acreage which really feels like a forest! I have been thinking about putting a stationary RV close to our house on our property as a guest house--and maybe even Air Bnb!
Best of luck!
