US Senator Lindsey Graham dies after 'brief and sudden illness', his office says

With Graham’s death, some interesting dichotomies are coming to the fore.

He was immediately praised, as a steadfast support of Israel by one of their most notorious ministers.

A career of warmongering; the callousness with which he cheered for starting new wars and yet he doesn’t get much support in memorial outreaches but the requisite ones from political officials.

His death opens up another senate race, and will reveal how much support Trump’s MAGA-ied Republican Party has in South Carolina.

The most interesting is the gentocratic political class noting his age of just having turned 71 a few days ago, and the sudden illness. A simple heart attack, as officially being reported reminds us all how fragile life is.

For all the news, I would have thought Mitch McConnell would have gone first......

Hopefully a generational shift.

Graham said in a recent interview that he “will be Israel till his dying day”. Well hopefully this will open up a shift where the under 50, on both sides of the aisle will overrule the gerontocracy’s affiliation with Israel.

At the risk of invoking @Musings ire, we will just have to wait and see. :D

The Republicans are trying everything above and below the belt to shore up their waning electoral performances in the run up to the mid terms. Some efforts are being tested in courts. It all will depend on how motivated the people would be to make their wishes known by then.
 
According to South Carolina law, Gov. Henry McMaster will appoint a temporary replacement to fill Graham's seat until Jan. 3 of next year.


In June, Graham defeated multiple primary challengers to secure his party's nomination as he vied for a potential fifth term. Now, a special primary must be held by Aug. 11, according to state election laws, to find a replacement nominee.

This also has implications for how “Pax Americana” was governed, Graham was very involved in overseas trips, especially in the Middle East and Afghanistan/Pakistan. With his passing, as Kennedy once said, the torch has been pasted to a new generation. The younger generation, is less likely to want to be bogged down in Middle East politics, and will probably back a focus on finally pivoting to China and economics.

These will perhaps be the most consequential midterm elections in modern US political history, no doubt.
