Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt propose truce amid Iranian attacks on Gulf states​

It’s been busy nights and days [in the Gulf] in the past 12 consecutive nights of US attacks.

Iran’s formula is pretty straight. They’ve laid it out, saying, “Eye for an eye”, after the US president said that his forces are going to attack an Iranian bridge or a power plant every time a ship gets attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran says they’re going to play it the same way.

We’ve seen these attacks continue across GCC countries, namely Kuwait and Bahrain, in the past 12 days, and also Jordan. On Wednesday, Jordan’s military said that it shot down four missiles, and Kuwait was also attacked.

So, in all these days, we’ve seen the GCC countries come under attack for a war they did not start, for a war they say they do not support, and if at all, are making efforts to bring back the ceasefire.

The latest on that is we’ve had Qatar, Pakistan and Egypt propose a 10-day ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, so that this does not widen into a regional conflict.

This is why I keep repeating like a broken record, all the voice and noise here, the Govt. Of Pakistan and regional nations have a handle on what is going on and what games are being played.

Egypt and Pakistan are fine but why Qatar? they are a party in this war...if they really wants the truce perhaps firstly ask US to stop its land and airspace for the attacks on iran.fi

Jani its not about being cowed... No one wants this war to drag on to a point of no return. The Houthis situation will lead to a protracted mess for Egypt, KSA and North Africa (wait and see). The main issue here is the US and Iran getting back to the table and sorting out some agreement.

The amount of hardware the US has stationed now in Europe, Med and MENA is staggering. People are still blowing smoke up people's backsides.

As I mentioned a long time ago when this war started, this was going to get a whole lot worse.

Qatar has always been pragmatic and wanted to avoid regional polarization.

Held a telephone conversation with my dear brother, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, this morning.

I condemned, in the strongest possible terms, the Houthi militia’s attacks against Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. Such actions are unacceptable, violate international law, threaten freedom of navigation, and undermine regional peace and security.

I reaffirmed Pakistan’s complete solidarity with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and conveyed that I, together with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the entire Pakistani nation, stand firmly and resolutely with the Saudi leadership and the brotherly people of the Kingdom at this critical time.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and I agreed to continue working very closely to maintain regional peace, security, stability, and the uninterrupted flow of lawful maritime commerce through the Red Sea as well as the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region.

Personally, if it were at all possible, I would prefer if our government did not engage in this conflict, thankfully many inside Pakistan govt. support this view, the reason is simple - a protracted conflict involving multiple Muslim nations fighting other muslin nations only plays into the hands of enemies who are waiting for this to happen.

Sir, all rational people would support this view. However, by signing a formal defense pact, which is something all previous governments had avoided, the current rulers have limited the freedom of action and made it more difficult to not get pulled into the conflict.

Pakistan is not an Island, no nation is - we are not immune from this crisis, we rely on fuel from that part of the world, we have long standing partnerships with nations in that part of the world, Pakistan despite the chest thumping on this forum wants peaceful relationships with all nations within our orbit and beyond.

Pakistan has repeatedly played its part to bring this conflict to a peaceful conclusion, the expansion of the conflict beyond the SOH threatens a vital supply line for Pakistan, ultimately the state of Pakistan will do what it feels is the best thing in her long term strategic interest.

It's a simple fact.

Everything you have stated would have been essentially as true even if a formal defense pact had not been signed. It is also a fact that the state of Pakistan has less agency to not get involved now that it has made formal commitments to Saudi Arabia. Of course, some benefits might have accrued from having signed the formal pact compared to continuing the status quo. The question is were they worth it, in retrospect. In my view, certainly not.
