The BJP didn't win just because of mainstream India. It won because India is more than just a small middle class which uses its vote to protest against sold out media (which I have yet to see happen). It wins because of handouts and freebies to India's impoverished masses, cow fanatic politics, staged attacks, buying out opposition and bureaucracy, etc.

BJP came to power following the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare. That period also saw the emergence of new political parties, including AAP. Many view the movement as one of the major factors that weakened the UPA government and paved the way for political change.

BJP rode that reformist wave. After two successive re-elections, however, some people are once again looking for change. For many voters, issues such as governance, jobs, inflation, and corruption matter more than ideology alone.

Indian democracy is a well oiled machine. It continues to function regardless of who is at the top, with much of the day to day administration carried out by the bureaucracy and other institutions.

Corruption and illiteracy are challenges that many countries have faced and many continue to face as they develop.

The state could use repressive measures. It is their prerogative and it is the prerogative of the citizens to push back for their rights. Such protests worldwide has even lead to deaths which gladly wasn't the case here, that is what happened in Nepal and Bangladesh and in your nation.

The whole point of democracy is accountability. The police officers who used violence are next on the list.
