Tesla outsells BYD in BEVs by nearly 30% in Q1

This only means more Chinese competitors enter the market, US just has Tesla , but China has dozens of domestic peer rivals.
Also on April 1, Nio announced big subsidies for trading in traditional gasoline cars for buying a new Nio EV.
Li Auto blamed weak demand for the high-end Mega minivan. Its first BEV launched on March 1 with deliveries starting days later. But the magnitude of the March miss suggested broader weakness for Li Auto's L7, L8 and L9 SUVs. Those vehicles are extended-range EVs, essentially a form of plug-in hybrid.
Li's March sales rose from February's 20,151, but were below January's 31,165.
Also Monday, XPeng doubled incentives on its flagship SUV, the G9.
In Q1, BYD sold 612,315 vehicles, up 8% vs. a year earlier, with passenger BEVs up 9% to 291,730.
BYD has slashed prices across most of its lineup over the past several weeks, taking advantage of lower battery prices and its low-cost leadership.
March sales included a record 38,434 exports. Overseas sales are a growing share of BYD demand and expected to keep increasing in the coming months.

China EV handset giant Xiaomi has made a big entry in the EV market. On Friday, Xiaomi claimed 120,000 orders in 36 hours for its SU7 sedan, which offers advanced smart car connectivity and undercuts the Tesla Model 3 by more than $4,000. The SU7 will also compete with sedans from Nio, XPeng, BYD and many others.
Along with deep-pocketed Geely, which owns Zeekr and other EV brands, it's a steep climb for China EV makers, especially those like Nio and XPeng that are still losing money. Xiaomi concedes it'll lose month on every SU7 sold.
Nio Deliveries
Nio delivered 11,886 vehicles in March for a total of 30,053 BEVs in the first quarter. On March 27, Nio cut its Q1 delivery forecast to around 30,000 vehicles, down from its March 5 target of 31,000-33,000. Li Auto Deliveries
Li Auto delivered 28,984 EVs in March and 80,400 for Q1. BYD Sales
BYD sold 302,459 vehicles in March, up from just 122,311 EVs in February and January's 201,493, but below December's record 341,043. BYD has completely collapsed as the top selling EV maker as Tesla regains the thrown after losing it in the final QTR of 2023.
BYD's attempts at selling their cars around the world have not saved them. They still rely heavily on the local Chinese market to show any kind of success.
Remember 2023 was supposed to be "The Year".

Honestly it was a very bad quarter for Tesla, yet they still had 30% higher sales than BYD.
Hopefully Tesla refocuses and ramps production and moves quickly on the $25K model.

Tesla regained its crown as the world’s biggest seller of pure electric vehicles (EVs) in the first quarter, as Huawei Technologies and other start-ups snapped at the heels of the market leader BYD, driving the industry into a ferocious price war in China.
Deliveries by the Austin, Texas-based company fell 20 per cent to 386,810 units worldwide in the first three months, according to a statement on Tuesday. However, that surpassed BYD’s deliveries, which tumbled 43 per cent to 300,114 units in the same period.
BYD, which counts Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway among its shareholders, only overtook the US company in the fourth quarter of last year.
“BYD suffered a big setback in the Chinese market as it faces stiff competition from emerging rivals such as Huawei’s Aito-branded cars,” said Gao Shen, an independent analyst in Shanghai. “Its recent price cuts will help the company bolster sales in the coming months at the expense of profitability.”
The battleground in mainland China, the single-largest EV market accounting for about 60 per cent of global sales, has been heating up in recent months as EV makers from BYD to Xpeng and Li Auto engage in a price war to snare increasingly selective and cautious buyers.
Sales of pure-electric cars in China rose 17.4 per cent to 597,000 units in the first two months this year, according to the latest available data compiled electric-car news site CnEVPost, compared with a 7.1 per cent pace in the same period in 2023. Sales rose 37 per cent in 2023, easing from a 96 per cent pace in 2022 and 168 per cent in 2021.
BYD sold 160,212 pure EV worldwide during the first two months of this year, 1 per cent lower than a year ago, with China dominating the volume. Its market share in China slipped to 26.8 per cent from 31.8 per cent over the same period.
In contrast, Tesla’s deliveries in China rose 15 per cent to 70,002 units in the first two months from a year earlier, helping the carmaker maintain its market share at just under 12 per cent.
Aito, backed by telecommunication equipment giant Huawei Technologies, reported 54,115 pure electric and plug-in hybrid car sales over the same period, a 578 per cent surge from the same period in 2023.

I just came back from China. The domestic EV competition is really fierce. BYD has the safest batteries, but their range is behind CATL batteries.
Before the usual suspects start gloating, just remember that these Tesla cars are produced in Shanghai. Even Tesla made in the US will be using CATL battery technology produced under license.

..and before you start gloating CATL has a license for LFP batteries granted by US/Canadian companies since the patent originated at the University of Texas Austin back in the 1990's and expanded on by a Canadian company.

Buffet has not invested in Tesla.
This may turn out to be a mistake, it's too early to tell, but he's clearly betting that the Chinese will eventually win.
Musk himself is sounding alarm bells.
The good news for Tesla is the cultural chasm: Chinese EV companies have a notoriously bad reputation for after sales service. This may be acceptable in developing countries where price is the only consideration, but they will need to change that mindset if they want to thrive in the developed world.

China is known for dozens of great companies and America only has 1 company (tesla). America is a dying world power quickly drifting into darkness of economic/political/demographic destruction while China still has a long way to go before 60k gdp per capita.

BYD looks boring right now.
Just look at other Chinese brands, like Xiaomi SU7.
At least, EV should be smart, not just plain EV.
That is the selling point.
BYD should work together with Huawei, adopting Huawei FSD.
