Pakistan emerges as new donkey supplier to China: report

Many Chinese companies are now investing in Pakistan donkey business. Like this in KPK. It will become $1bn export by 2035.

The Project Breakdown

September 2025, the Chinese company Sing Ying (also reported as Sang Yang or Shang Yang) agreed to invest $37 million into Pakistan’s livestock sector specifically for donkey breeding.

The initiative is designed to transition Pakistan's local donkey population into a highly structured, export-driven supply chain:

  • Infrastructure: 40 specialized commercial farms will be established across regions like Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, and Mansehra.
  • Scientific Backing: A dedicated modern breeding laboratory is being set up at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, to ensure breeding meets international standards and focuses on genetics and sustainable population growth.
  • Production Targets: The goal is to breed 120,000 donkeys annually.
  • Phased Rollout: The first three to five years are strictly dedicated to intensive breeding and population growth. After this phase, the farms will process roughly 10,000 donkeys a month for export.
