Saudi Arabia Turns the Tables on the Houthis Diplomatically

The Security Council issues an official warning to the Houthi militia.

The warning was issued in a new press statement by the members of the UN Security Council. In the statement, the members condemned in the strongest terms the Houthis' continued attacks on Saudi Arabia, including attacks targeting civilians and energy infrastructure, resulting in civilian casualties (including women and children).

Most importantly, they affirmed Saudi Arabia's inherent right to self-defense in accordance with international law and expressed their solidarity with the Kingdom.

The members also condemned the attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, stressing that the Houthi forces must respect international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and uphold freedom of navigation.

They called for practical cooperation, including with the Yemeni government, to enforce the arms embargo on the Houthis under Security Council Resolution 2216 and prevent the group from acquiring weapons, training, or funding for further attacks.

The Council also issued a warning about the deteriorating humanitarian situation inside Yemen, where the UN says at least 125,000 people have been displaced across the country since the beginning of September due to the Houthi offensive.

It reiterated its demand for the “unconditional, safe, and immediate release of all detainees, including 73 UN staff members” and NGO and civil society workers held by the group.

Council members said the escalating confrontation—Houthi attacks on Saudi territory, threats to shipping in the Red Sea, and advances near the Bab al-Mandab Strait—risks “further expanding the conflict, threatening maritime security and international trade, and undermining regional and international efforts to secure peace in Yemen.”

What does this mean?

Pressure is mounting on the Houthis… and this is direct support from the Security Council for Saudi Arabia…

1- Political and legal cover for the Saudi response: The explicit affirmation of Saudi Arabia’s inherent right to self-defense under international law, along with mention of civilian casualties (women and children) and damage to energy infrastructure, gives Saudi Arabia strong international legitimacy for any military or security response. This differs from previous statements, which were more balanced.

2- International isolation of the Houthis and their designation as an aggressor: The statement holds the Houthis responsible for the escalation within Yemen, the attacks on Saudi Arabia, and the threat to navigation. It does not place both sides on the same level, which weakens the group’s narrative as a resistance force or a legitimate political party, and reinforces its characterization as a militia that threatens regional and international security.

3- Internationalization of Bab al-Mandab and the Red Sea: Linking the attacks to maritime security, the Law of the Sea Convention, and international trade transforms the issue from a Yemeni-Yemeni conflict into a global maritime security matter. This opens the door to greater international maritime coordination and increases the cost of any Houthi escalation on trade and energy.

4- Indirect pressure on Iran and supply lines/
The statement calls for the enforcement of the arms embargo under Resolution 2216 in cooperation with the Yemeni government, effectively targeting arms, training, and financing networks.

Now you got the legal framework for other countries to chip in some ground forces... houthis are verily screwed ,.... after dealing with houthis there will be a final round with Iran and the Iranians know that....
