Second Congo War - Wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org

The Second Congo War, also known as Africa's World War, was a massive continental conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that lasted from August 1998 to July 2003. [1, 2, 3]

Overview and Causes
    • Start Date: August 2, 1998, following the First Congo War. [1, 2, 3]
    • Trigger: Congolese President Laurent-Désiré Kabila turned against Rwanda and Uganda, his former allies who helped him take power, and ordered their military forces to leave the country. [1, 2]
    • Resource Wealth: The region's rich deposits of gold, diamonds, and coltan heavily fueled the conflict, with foreign armies and militias fighting to control lucrative mining areas. [1]

Its probably time for the muslim somalis of ogaden to start their separatists war.

The Ogaden War was a conventional military conflict fought between Somalia and Ethiopia from July 1977 to March 1978 over control of the disputed Ogaden region. [1]

Overview and Causes
    • The Conflict: Somalia invaded Ethiopia in July 1977 to annex the Ogaden region, which was populated predominantly by ethnic Somalis, supporting the Western Somali Liberation Front (WSLF). [1, 2, 3, 4]
    • Historical Roots: The dispute originated from colonial-era border delineations by Britain, Italy, and Ethiopia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that divided traditional nomadic Somali grazing lands. Annexing Ogaden was part of Somalia's long-term irredentist goal to create a "Greater Somalia". [1, 2, 3, 4]

Cold War Dynamics and Shift in Alliances
    • Initial Somali Success: Backed by the Soviet Union with arms and training, the Somali National Army and WSLF quickly captured large portions of the desert region. [1, 2, 3]
    • The Soviet and Cuban Intervention: The Soviet Union shifted its allegiance to Ethiopia's new Marxist Derg regime. Moscow supplied massive amounts of advanced military equipment and deployed roughly 15,000 Cuban combat troops to aid Ethiopia. [1, 2]

Outcome and Aftermath
    • Somali Defeat: Bolstered by Soviet logistics and Cuban troops, Ethiopian forces launched a decisive counteroffensive, forcing surviving Somali troops to retreat by March 1978. [1]
    • Long-Term Impact: The defeat ruined Somalia's economy, triggered a massive refugee crisis, and destabilized Siad Barre's government, laying groundwork for the eventual collapse of the Somali state in 1991. For background context, read more via History State Gov. [1, 2, 3]

The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has formed a broad military coalition with six other regional armed groups. Dubbed the Ethiopian Peoples' Forces Alliance for Survival, this multi-ethnic rebel alliance was publicly announced to overthrow the federal government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. [1, 2, 3]
This marks a massive shift in alignment, as the coalition brings together former battlefield enemies from the 2020–2022 Tigray War to fight their common adversary in Addis Ababa. [1, 2]

The Core Members of the Alliance
The coalition spans roughly half of Ethiopia's 12 regional states: [1]
    • Amhara Fano National Movement: Led by Zemene Kasse (who chairs the new alliance), Fano is a network of Amhara militias. Notably, Fano fought against the TPLF alongside federal troops during the previous Tigray war before launching its own insurgency against Abiy Ahmed.
    • Oromo Liberation Army (OLA): An active, long-standing insurgency operating in Ethiopia's most populous region, Oromia.
    • Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (ARDUF / Ugugumo): An armed group representing interests in the neighboring Afar region.
    • Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF): Representing Somali regional interests.
    • Benishangul People's Liberation Movement (BPLM)
    • Gumuz People's Democratic Movement (GPDM) [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]

Seems the Ethiopian military is still stronger than the rebel alliance.

African union is as useless as the OIC. They are mostly champions of press releases.

You hear all this support Turkey give to Somalia maybe somalia should try to take back Ogaden?

I had a somali friend growing up and all he keeps talking about when discussing politics is how ogaden is somali land and needs to return to somalia.

He is using Somali region forces on the Tigray and they are terrified of these because the Tigrayans have been fighting the somali region for like 40 years and now the tables have turned and the somalis are giving it to the Tigray hence why the civil war is ending quickly becuase if you give the Ogdan region somalis free hand on the Tigray people they will commit genocide on them and majority of the atricious on the Tigray in this war and the last one was done by Somali forces from the Somali region of Ethiopia
