Wangchuk was on a 26-day hunger strike during the CJP protest in July

Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk says he will consider launching another hunger strike or a padayatra (peace march) if the government does not release all detained protesters within 24 hours.

In a video posted on X, Wangchuk - who was on a 26-day hunger strike during the first wave of the cockroach protests in July - condemned the crackdown in Delhi and described the situation as resembling an "undeclared Emergency", referring to the Emergency imposed in India in the 1970s, when civil liberties and rights were suspended.

"If the people are not released in the next 24 hours, I will be forced to consider peaceful means of protest - be it a sit-in, a hunger strike or a peaceful march, in Delhi or Leh," he says.

He adds that he hopes the government will resolve the matter through dialogue and that such steps would not be necessary.

Wangchuk's presence during the first Cockroach Janta Party protest had galvanised support for the movement.

He was forcibly taken to hospital on the 20th day of his fast, sparking anger and prompting a wave of popular support. He continued his fast for a few more days before ending it.

Is Modi going to fold like a house of cards? The pressure is increasing.

Citizens can hold their government accountable and take to the streets if needed. News at 6

India needs more of these, not less. Big questions for me:
1) When and how will India get rid of systematic/big babu corruption starting with land
2) When will we treat each other well despite the differences in economic, regional, gender differences - slow improvements are there but its just too slow
3) How do we uplift the bottom 50% of our population much quicker and better - the current government has been a failure, giving out rations or direct transfer means nothing if the income disparity is rising - yes housemaids in few pockets earn more but are you telling me that the buying power / QOL is better vs. say 10 years back - I would think not
4-10) Pollution, civic sense, respect for animals etc etc. - if we hit 1)-3), we can focus more on 4-10

India’s ‘Cockroach’ leaders detained; New Delhi in lockdown

Indian police crackdown appears to have prevented mass protests against the country’s election chief from taking place.

Will Modi plead again and seek forgiveness from gen Z?

Don't know why you're obsessed with Modi and these protests so much - do you even have a substantive POV or just posting for shits and giggles?

What you're witnessing is democracy at work - the protestors are not heavy handed or given third-degree torture. Most Indians are argumentative by default and recognize the right of protestors.

Now do you want to look in the mirror (IK, Kashmir protests and on and on)?

Cokroaches will win as majority in indians are cockroaches

OMG! I recall way back in early 90s meeting a PhD student here in America from Bangladesh who said 'Indians are like cockroaches. They are everywhere in the world!'.

Even the anti-Pakistan Shashi Tharoor is now posing tough questions.

Typical politician. And they are everywhere--in India, in Pakistan, and in America. Any opportunity to get back to power.

Good post.

As for my opinion of the Cockroach Janata Party (People's Cockroach Party) of India: More power to them and to the anarchist Arvind Kejriwal! Just like the Indians and Afghans come defending Pakistan's own anarchist-in-prison, we return the favor and without any shame or guilt!

I used to support Kejri and AAP in very early days. Unfortunately, they haven't accomplished much and are looking for excuses. One thing that is missing from Indian polity: opposition and genuine will to work for the larger public. Call it what you may but people see Modi different from BJP and think because he doesn't have a family, he is doing what he can for the country. Some of it is true but candidly, just having right intentions is not sufficient.

At the end, we have to view from the lens of on-ground impact/results. And there I would say, the performance is mixed. Many good steps but equal number of missed opportunities. That combined with an underlying current of fake "patriotism" where criticizing a politician surmounts to being "anti-national" is just plain wrong.

Having said all this, gun to my head and I have to vote for a party (and say gun is being held by a neutral) - I will vote for BJP. Such is a level of opposition in India
