‘Pakistan’s poverty rate higher than India, B’desh’

Breaks my heart, man.
Elites & people running the country just need to give a shit. IK We are MUCH better than this
Beyond embarrassing and depressing.
I am saying this because both india and Bangladesh have much bigger problems than us: overpopulation(we didnt have this problem for the most part till now- now I think this is our problem too), religious flashpoints, lower resources, especially in the case of B'desh
If you actually sit back and look, even in the 60s and 50s our situation besides Kashmir was much more stable in many ways
We should have been at least twice as rich on per capital basis than both of em WITHOUT BREAKING A SWEAT, and that's not even me painting an ideal picture.

Its embarrassing; I feel like the energy crisis of the 2000s, 2010s + Terrorism of 2000s, 2010s, 2020s really did a number.

The powerful saying is worth something: power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely; nowhere is this more true than case of Pakistan. Based on today, India's civilian leadership were "meek", "non-aggressive" in the past but Pakistan establishment continued to fester hostilities to cement their hold on the government and discorporate share of assets. Terrorism, religious segregation and many other issues stem from the desire to hold power.

Its hard to imagine how a country of 260M hasn't had a democratically elected govt. last a single term. The biggest thing in democracy is peaceful transfer of power but in Pakistan there is no transfer at all. If citizens' can't hold elected reps to account, how will a democracy function - and if democracy doesn't function the state will always have a "power" center which takes away a disproportionate share of assets.

Unfortunate situation, to put it mildly. Enemies or not, the heart breaks a little when a young kid can't afford meals or educated youth are unemployed.

Low real growth and high inflation can surely increase nominal GDP (someone wants it) but high inflation eats into real wages, erodes purchasing power and that's why poverty is very likely going to increase and not decrease.

Nice Try . This is the problem with PTI cultists they dont read. btw the survey is from 2018. and no sample size was provided.
It took 4 posts for the dictators fan it's to show up unashamedly.

Oh but the survey was done in 2017 and 2018. That's fine, it's OK that 38% of Pakistan is starving in 2018, they voted PTI then.

Its the age of AI not ISPR your **** bullshit doesn't count for anything anymore. Only people like you use it for copium.

Today it's projected to be at 44%.

It is disappointing. Well we have to fix Pakistan up, I guess.

Faujews and Askarandus will do anything to justify this corrupt and extractive post colonial system. They'd tell you it's PTI that's the cancer ( ran Pakistan for just 3 years btw and we had COVID too and they had to deal with these lackies then too ).

Well who tf has been running Pakistan since last 7 decades lmao? Same ngas who shuttled the founder of the nation to Ziarat and teach us in schools that bro chose Ziarat himself cause it's a sanitorium 🤣

What has been destroyed consistently by each and every polity, politician/general, over the past 30+ years will not get fixed through miracles nor will it be fixed overnight. Nobody has an easy fix. They sit on it passing interim measures only to make the problem bigger for those that come after. The hot-potato situation continues thus Pakistan is the only country in the world that has never graduated from any of the multitude of IMF dictated programs.

Adding a basic overview from Google for additional context beyond the Dawn article:

Independent international bodies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank, attribute Pakistan’s disproportionately high poverty and economic instability to deep structural imbalances, governance failures, and elite capture rather than a simple lack of cash. [1, 2]
The country's economic model has effectively reached its structural limit, resulting in a system highly fragile to shocks. The core drivers behind Pakistan's persistent development challenges include: [1]

1. Chronic Misgovernance & Elite Capture
According to reports by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), poor governance is identified as the foundational driver of Pakistan's systemic poverty. [1, 2]
  • Economic policies have historically favored "elite capture"—where subsidies, tax exemptions, and resources heavily benefit powerful real estate, agricultural, and political cartels while leaving the broader population underserved.
  • Political instability and short-sighted fiscal horizons mean that successive administrations focus on immediate political survival rather than long-term industrialization or infrastructure development. [1, 2]

2. Failure to Invest in Human Capital
While neighbors like India and Bangladesh heavily prioritized literacy, basic health, and female labor workforce participation over the last three decades, Pakistan underinvested in its people. [1]
  • In the latest Global MPI data, education is the single largest contributor to deprivation in Pakistan.
  • An economy cannot transition into high-yield, tech-driven, or manufacturing industries when an enormous segment of its upcoming generation is out of school, malnourished, or lacks vocational training. This creates a permanent bottleneck of low-productivity labor. [1, 2, 3]

3. The "Tax-to-GDP" and Debt Trap
Pakistan suffers from a chronic revenue crisis. [1, 2]
  • The country possesses a massive informal economy that largely operates outside the official tax net. Because successive governments have been unable or unwilling to aggressively tax wealthy landowners, retail moguls, or real estate developers, the state relies heavily on regressive indirect taxes on everyday goods, crushing the lower and middle classes. [1, 2]
  • To cover fiscal deficits, Pakistan must continuously borrow. A significant portion of national revenue is spent merely servicing debt, leaving negligible funds for healthcare, clean water infrastructure, or public education. [1, 2, 3]

4. Extreme Climate Vulnerability
Pakistan pays a catastrophic price for climate change despite contributing minimally to global emissions. [1]
  • The 2022 monsoon floods alone inflicted an estimated $30 billion in damages, wiped out vast swaths of critical agricultural crops, and displaced millions.
  • For a population where 12.9% are perpetually "vulnerable" to poverty, a single climate hazard immediately decimates their homes and assets, pushing them past the threshold of acute multi-indicator collapse. [1, 2, 3, 4]

5. Consumption-Driven vs. Export-Led Growth
Pakistan's economic model relies heavily on importing fuel, machinery, and luxury items while possessing a narrow export base primarily limited to textiles and low-value agriculture. [1, 2]
  • Whenever the economy begins to grow, imports surge, foreign exchange reserves deplete rapidly, and the country falls into a balance-of-payments crisis.
  • This cycle routinely forces the state back to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for bailout packages. The austerity conditions required by these programs—such as raising electricity tariffs and removing fuel subsidies—stabilize macroeconomics but fuel skyrocketing inflation that directly drives local poverty rates up. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The govts just roll out anti people policies. Rather than replacing expensive fossil fuels with renewable power they actually charge people who generate solar power. The Pakistani consumer led a solar revolution in this country only to be penalised for it.

No need to be so sentimental. Pakistan is already among the finest in the entire Islamic world. It has nuclear weapons and can produce fighter jets and missiles, and it is growing ever more weighty in this increasingly turbulent era. God did not endow the land with wealth, but with your own hands you can create it.
