It is the birthplace of Urdu, that smoothest of tongues.
I only know muslims from around delhi, and a handful of kashmiris in a personal capacity. K guys speak Koshur among themselves, the dilli walas speak normal everyday hindi, never heard proper proper urdu, like without any hindi words. I sometimes watch urdu news from Pakistan, kasam se.. most of it upar se nikal jaati hai.

Yes it is and the lingua franca of the Muslims
But except for the elite families
Muslims of Gagentic plains spoke their native languages alongside Hindustani which became Urdu for the economically privileged classes

Yes, my uncle Mushir, who was a historian of some repute, erstwhile UP nawabi family or something.. spoke with that drawl.. raja type aadmi tha. He was having the very good urdu.
