Iranian President Raisi and Foreign Minister Abdollahian die in helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan

Those sanctions are an honour, something slaves and hypocrites just can't fathom. So Iran deserved it because they don't recognise Israel? Amazing how incidents like these unmask the hypocrites in our midst.
So have no development, and remain a backward country, lol?

It is better for Iran to be like China or Japan economically than some backward country.

The general state of the Iranian aviation industry as publicly reported over the years, make it highly likely maintenance some role. But sure, let’s wait for the investigation report. But if you were responsibly for the helicopters, today, perhaps you would be reviewing safety procedures with pilots and maintenance crew. A ground of the fleet for a short while, out of precaution, wouldn’t be unusual.

Iran might not have been able to buy the best and most modern Russian helicopters but could have redirected some of its current fleet of Mi-17, and been better able to surreptitiously been able to buy spares with little fanfare or notice. The Iran navy operates 45 Mi-17 alone.

Flying in that kind of weather brother in a helicopter is plain ignorance. Any chopper pilot will tell you fog is a killer in a helicopter. If you are a weak pilot crashing is almost a given. Add wind and it's an impossible situation to manage.even with modern equipment you would not fly under them conditions fog strong wind / snow.

What's the local update on rumors of a rift between Raisi and the Ayatollah?

Some say the Ayatollah wants his son to success him and Raisi was against that?

It is entirely possible that this was an accident. I did a poll (with myself) and the results were as follows:

Accident: 5%
Sabotage: 90%
I don't know: 5%

Every day 100,000 flights take off flying 6 million people. They fly over mountains, deserts, icecaps, oceans, through fog, rain, and snow and somehow they all survive. Yet, the two people the Americans and Israelis wanted dead die, how convenient. It's so much of a coincidence that it's easier to believe Father Christmas is real.

I think that the helicopter was brought down in one of two ways:

1. Zia ul Haq style. Military insiders working for CIA loaded Zia's place with a cylinder with some sort of gas hidden in a mango crate. The cylinder exploded and incapacitated the pilots and the plane crashed.

2. A US military plane flying from Israel to Baku could have fried the electronics of the helicopter. All the electronic controls would have switched off suddently leaving the pilot disoriented and the helicopter crashed into a mountain.

I'm sure the Iranian, Russian, Chinese, Turkish etc governments know exactly what happened but they won't announce it. If Iran admits it was a US-Israeli hit then they'll be embarrassed and will come under pressure to retaliate. Therefore, they won't say anything.

I'm sure Putin will be worried more than anyone else.

that is opposite of reality, Khamenei doesn't really want his son to take over and people were speculating that he was setting the scene for Raisi to succeed him. they were very close allies.

10 years ago a Polish government plane crashed and 96 high ranking political and military figures all died, including the President, Chief of Staff, and 18 parliament members (and many more top executives). it happens

True, at best they could have taken waited, but if they had to go and had a more capable helicopter, they could have flown higher, above the cloud and fog layer. But as we saw with the Indian CDS Bipin Rawat’s crash with a brand new Mi-17 and Kobe Bryant’s crash with a S-76B, thick fog is grounds to scrub a flight and go by road if you must travel.

Who are the likely contenders to succeed Khamenei and what would be the basis one of them to be chosen over the others?

Even rescue crew could not immediately penetrate the crash area because of a thick blanket of FOG.
Helicopters constantly crash in foggy, bad weather in mountainous areas. It happens all the time.
West does not have the science to create fog and mountains in Iran.

Yes it is Frustrating it should not have happened.

Goodness.this is pure accident...the helicopter is an old one travelling in a bad weather..

That crash was also suspicious. The new government found it better not to dig too deep and disbanded the investigation commission.

Polish commission again accuses Russia over 2010 Smolensk plane crash

Smoleńsk crash investigation commission abolished by new Polish government

these things happen behind the scenes and the assembly will vote on who should replace him and that can't be predicted very well, so nobody knows at this point

but you should look at close allies of Khamenei and important members of the 88 member assembly of experts for clues

not really, the president lost his brother in that crash and held vendetta against Russia so tried to reopen the investigation to blame it on Russia but it was without merit

I agree with you that it’s best for everyone to let this one go. Live to fight another day.

As I understand, there were three helicopters flying closely. To disable the electronics in only one chopper remotely would require some very fancy technology. Accident or sabotage is more credible.

Israel will be the first to propagate rumors that this was an Israeli hit. Regardless of whether it is true or not, it will strengthen the narrative that Israel works in mysterious ways and always gets their man.
