Pakistan Ordinance Factories - POF

"The Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) is a major firearms, defence contractor, and military corporation headquartered in Wah Cantt, Punjab, Pakistan. It is 'the largest defence industrial complex under the Ministry of Defence Production, producing conventional arms & ammo to international standards. POF Board headquarter is at Wah Cantt.

Presently POF comprises of [sic] 14 ordnance factories and three commercial subsidiaries. Pakistan Ordnance Factories also manufacture commercial explosives, hunting ammunition and possess extensive facilities for the manufacture of brass, copper and aluminum ingots, extrusions and sections for non-military applications. A garments factory, which has state of the art cloth cutting facilities and modern stitching units, manufactures military uniforms and can also cater for the needs of the civil sector'.

Founded in 1951 by the government of Pakistan with early collaboration from the British Royal Ordnance Factory, the POF engineers, develops, produces, manufactures, and promotes a wide range of different types of infantry and special-purpose weapons, explosives, ammunition, mortars, rockets, and the military gear for Pakistan's military. Its corporate leadership comes from a deputation by GHQ where the chief of army staff (COAS) approves the appointment, but POF is under the Ministry of Defense, so the COAS is not in the direct chain of command.

The POF is the earliest and one of the largest military corporations in Pakistan, and later influenced many other military corporations in the Pakistan Armed Forces. POF produces ammunition that meets requirements set by NATO specification. Apart from military works, the POF also serves the civilian law enforcement agencies, paramilitary, and private security markets nationwide." -- Summary retrieved on October 7, 2019

Assalam alaikum
The purpose of this thread is discussing latest situation in indigenous small arms development, while much of the focus maybe on the the replacement of the Pakistani service rifle other firearms may also be discussed.

REPLACING THE G3 & TYPE 56
In the mid 2010s, a process to replace the serving rifles of the Pakistani military i.e. G3 and the Type 56 was initiated. A competition was held between various international firearms such as the Belgian FN-SCAR (7.62x51mm), Czech Republic’s CZ-BREN (5.56x45mm), Italian Beretta ARX-200 (7.62x39mm), and the Russian AK-103 (7.62x39mm).

Some other rifles (Bushmaster ACR, Zastava M21 and FN SCAR-H)

However despite much fanfare there were no tangible results and it appeared that the induction of new rifles program had largely ended without much success, however at that time Pakistan Ordnance Factories Wah were given the go ahead to develop a solution for the needs of the armed forces. POF would then unveil the BW20 as a potential successor of the G3 in December 2021 and then showcase a derivative in the form of the CW39 which would ostensibly replace the Type 56 as well as CW56.

BW20, CW39 and CW56
In December 2022, two new rifles by local manufacturers would showcase more local rifles which were the GIDS Klass 786 and the Cavalier Group Maverik

In August 23, it was reported by both POF Chief Designer Mr Salman Ali and Defense analyst International Defense Analysis that the Pakistan Navy Marines and the Frontier Constabulary had adopted the CW56 assault rifle.

However, until now no official replacement of the G3 has been notified and the process still seems to be ongoing.

Pakistan Forgotten Firearms: POF Wah’s previous roller delayed small arms projects
POF Weapons Designer Salman Ali uploaded a video to his channel which showcased some Pakistan Ordinance Factory roller delayed rifles GR3, PK7 and PK8 and also highlighted why they were not accepted into service.

PK-7

The PK7 is a 7.62x39mm caliber roller delayed platform which was patterned on the G3 and was built to cater to assault rifle needs. It is rather well known among Pakistan defense community as it seemed to be Pakistan’s answer to the famous AKM, however it was not inducted and the Chinese Type 56 (later manufactured/assembled as PK10) took its potential space.

PK-8

The PK-8 was also introduced alongside the PK-7 in the same time period which would be late 1990s or early 2000s. Like the PK-7 it also utilized the Roller Delayed system of the G3 and MP5 but had the calibre of 5.56 mm x 45 (same as M16 & M4 as well as assault rifles of NATO armies).

GR3

The GR3 has been a relatively unknown program to many. Which is quite ironic as it actually has been used in combat by Special forces and actually preceded both the PK7 and PK8. Furthermore, Heckler & Koch were actually involved in the development and it came with an integrated optical sight which was quite an advancement in the 1990s.

POF's Forgotten Firearms: The 313 Experimental Rifle
POF Weapons Designer Salman Ali uploaded a video to his channel which showcased an experimental rifle codenamed 313 which had been built in 2009. it was a roller delayed design (similar to G3 and BW20) but had additional modifications. According to YouTube description the rifle was 3.8 kg with its recoil mechanism shifted in the stock like German Stg44/45. It had a loading handle like AR15/M16 and only one prototype was made. It appears that the 313 has inspired the BW21.

Guns of POF: The BW20 Family
In December 2022, Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) released videos of new in-house, original rifle projects – the BW20 (Battle Weapon 20) and BW21 with both being chambered for 7.62×51 mm rounds. Details emerged about the BW20 which showed that it utilized roller-delayed blowback which is the same mechanism used in the Hecker & Koch G3, which is the standard-issue battle rifle of the Pakistan Army (PA) and one of POF’s main current products. Though the BW20 has some commonality with the G3 (around 30%), the BW20 is not an upgrade of the HK G3. From this many deduced that the BW20 was POF's solution for Pakistan Military's next-generation rifle requirements.

Soon the BW20 expanded to a whole family incorporating variants within the same caliber as well as different calibers.

In the 7.62x51mm, the BW20 has three main variants which are a 12-inch barrelled assault version for urban and close-in fighting roles, 16-inch barrelled version for standard infantry use, and a 20-inch marksman version, which features a modified stock.
The CW39 was revealed later chambered in 7.62x39mm and is widely seen as a successor to the Type 56 SMG used by assault troops as well as Law Enforcement.
