Bangladesh Economy

Hope it is ok for me to praise Hasina's foresight to build the nuclear power station when it was predicted by many here that this would be the worse decision for BD. ;)

Get your facts straight. It wasn't Hassina's foresight. It was originally a Pakistani initiative that chose Rooppur for NPP.

That was one of the best things she did for BD, among other great achievements as regards infrastructure.

Of course BD needs a 2nd nuclear power station as soon as possible and so if the BD economy turns around by 2026 as IMF predicts then another deal can be done with Russia for a 2nd Roopur for service in the early 2030s. It should cost a lot less money and time as BD companies and people now have some experience in building and running a nuclear power stations.

Do you remember the haters claiming BD had overcapacity lol

Counting those clunked out generators from the 1970s into the mix lol

On that basis we should thank the brits for padma and Jamuna bridges lol

So? Our maximum demand is 17,200MW. Much less than total production capacity.

Much of that capacity that you count on is unviable. It will have to massively subsidised or prices skyrocketing. Really only to be used for stop gaps like heat waves or major outages.

No. Provide evidence to back up your claim.

He is right that the plan was from 1961, Pakistan era.

There were feasibility studies done in the 70s and 80s during Zia and Ershad time, and even an agreement signed in 2005 with China, when BNP was in power. It wasn't a brainchild of Hasina alone.

What Hasina does deserve praise for is following through the works of past governments and getting it constructed.

As for thanking the Brits - yes we should absolutely thank them for the infrastructure they built some of which are still operational like the Hardinge Bridge. And we should thank the Japanese govt for repairing it after 1971.

LOL, the idea and NPP construction site was from Pakistan-era. BAL/hasina didn't do anything for this country. They took USD debt funded mega projects to bag and siphon around 30-50 percent of the inflated price tag.

Barring few almost every BAL/hasina dictatorial era projects are utter crap, unplanned and white elephant projects.

Err, when was Pakistan last in charge? 1971 I believe.

Lots of people have ideas but all that counts is who implements it successfully.

If you really think BD with absolutely no history with nuclear power plants could have got it 30-50% cheaper, then I have a bridge to sell you. Cost is similar to others who brought same technology and power output with zero or little experience - look at both Belarus and Egypt as examples.

From the cost it looks like the price was inflated by 10-15% due to mismanagement and corruption. I am more than happy with this as the benefits are enormous and will last generations. Upfront debt will be paid back with next to zero running costs over 6 decades. Think of instead of paying for coal or LNG, BD just makes repayments for loan and gets totally clean energy to boot.

The project would have been cheaper but Hasina wisely after the Japanese earthquake opted for the latest Russian design - VVER-1200.

Stop this partisan talk as it was Hasina and AL that managed to pull off the biggest and most critical project in BD history. Now BD is all set to build the next Roopur at 15-20% cheaper cost due to knowledge and experience from this first plant.

Oh I forgot I was replying to an awami leaguer.
.
You think BAL/hasina did some miracle? They just took a very bad loan from Russia and handed over a Pakistan era preplanned NPP construction site to them. Nothing else! In this process BAL/hasina managed to get huge bribe money.
.
And this looks miraculous to you lot? What are you? Zombies?

Stop this partisan talk
Simply put, awami leaguers and their sympathisers will get worse treatment in Bangladesh than NAZIs get in western states.
.
We aren't seeking reconciliation with you lot...

Come on @UKBengali! Pakistan did all the work but the governments of Zia and Ershad and Khaleda were so incompetent - the couldn’t execute the “fool froof” master plan, sir!

No logic and no data to back up their assertions.

Just "we have a feeling" and "trust me bro" talk.
