Alawite Bashar & his father had brutalised Sunnis in Syria for 40+ years similar to Saddam doing it to the Shias/kurds - wrong in Iraq and wrong in Syria. All this could have been avoided if Assad had acquiesced to the peoples demands back 15 years ago and made Syria a much more inclusive society.
I have a Syrian friend whose father passed away a few months back. He dared not go back to Syria fearing his name may be on a list and he'd be picked up as soon as he landed in Damascus.
