Yup, it is pretty large. Based on Satellite detection, majority of Indonesian land which is 51 % is still forest

And as one of archipelago countries, the water areas within our land territory is considered as our territory as well.

JAKARTA (Vietnam News/ANN): The Indonesian government has committed to developing Nusantara city in East Kalimantan into a complete political capital by 2028, one year before President Prabowo Subianto's term ends.

At a recent press conference following a cabinet meeting, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said that President Prabowo has approved a budget of 48.8 trillion IDR (over US$3 billion) for legislative and judicial facilities, as well as for ensuring the construction of roads in and around Nusantara and maintaining the facilities that have already been built there.

Indonesian targets to complete the construction of legislative and judicial buildings along with supporting facilities by 2028, as part of efforts to transform Nusantara into the political capital of the country.

This budget is lower than the 75 trillion IDR (US$4.6 billion) allocated by the administration of then President Joko Widodo from 2022 to 2024.

However, the head of the Nusantara Capital Authority (IKN), Basuki Hadimuljono, asserted that this amount will be sufficient to achieve all goals in the next two to three years because 61% of the first phase of the Nusantara construction process was completed by December 2024, including 109 government office building projects worth approximately 89 trillion IDR.

Prabowo is expected to make his first visit to Nusantara as President soon to oversee the groundbreaking of several projects, including hotels, residential buildings, and offices, with a total value of up to 6.5 trillion IDR.

However, there are still many questions about whether President Prabowo's administration has the ability or desire to continue developing the city, as he also has several priority projects with large budgets. - Vietnam News/ANN

Nusantara. The number of visitors to Indonesia’s future capital, Nusantara, has seen a significant uptick during the Eid al-Fitr holiday season. Daily visitor numbers rose from around 8,000 on the first day of Eid (April 1) to over 14,100 by April 3.

To accommodate the growing interest, the Nusantara Authority has extended visiting hours at the under-construction capital. Additional bus fleets have been deployed, while efforts are underway to improve traffic flow and parking arrangements to ensure a smooth experience for the public.

“We are currently conducting simulations for managing entry and exit access, especially regarding parking, in light of the extraordinary surge in visitors,” said Thomas Bolodadi, Deputy Head of the Nusantara Authority.

While optimizing the tourist experience, the authority is also working to ensure that ongoing construction and maintenance activities remain uninterrupted. One of the main challenges, Thomas noted, is limited parking availability.

To address this, the authority is exploring alternative parking locations at strategic points, such as in front of the Bank Indonesia building, near the Civil Servant housing area, and around Hermina Hospital.

Additionally, mitigation measures are being put in place to prevent overcrowding. “We are anticipating continued growth in visitor numbers by implementing a more efficient traffic and access system,” Thomas said.

Visitors are required to register via the IKNOW application before entering Nusantara’s core area, which includes high-level government buildings such as the future presidential palace. Visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Nusantara, East Kalimantan. The Nusantara Capital Authority officially launched construction on a 12-kilometer, 40-meter-wide main road in the heart of Indonesia’s future capital on Wednesday, aiming to complete the project within six months.

Basuki Hadimuljono, head of the Nusantara Capital Authority, said the project has a total budget of Rp 3 trillion (approximately $184.5 million) and is expected to be finished by the end of this year.

The road construction contract has been awarded to a consortium of many companies, mostly state-owned construction companies such as Waskita Karya, Hutama Karya, and Wijaya Karya (Wika).

“This is not a multi-year contract; it must be completed within a single fiscal year -- just 232 days,” Basuki said during the contract signing ceremony at his office. “I urge the contractors to give this project their full attention.”

Basuki added that the road will be significantly wider than existing national highways. “This will be a 40-meter-wide main artery -- much wider than typical national roads,” he added.

The six-month timeline aligns with the government’s 2025 budget disbursement schedule, as the funding for the project is sourced from the current fiscal year.

The road is considered critical infrastructure to support private sector investors who are preparing to begin construction of banks, schools, and hospitals within the core development area of Nusantara, Indonesia’s new capital.

Office Complex in the Central Government Core Area (KIPP) of Nusantara Capital City (IKN)

The types of infrastructure that are now entering the management phase include:

  • Buildings and Office Areas of Coordinating Ministries: Includes government offices and their supporting facilities.
  • Housing: Such as apartment buildings (Rusun) for State Civil Apparatus (ASN).
  • Green Open Spaces: Green areas, parks, and recreational facilities.
  • Roads: Main and supporting road networks connecting various areas within IKN.
  • Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM): Essential infrastructure for clean water supply.
  • Waste Management: City waste and sanitation management systems.
To operate and maintain all assets that have been built this year, the IKN Authority estimates a management budget requirement of around Rp 200 billion to Rp 300 billion.

This figure reflects the large scale of investment needed to keep IKN functioning as an efficient and comfortable city for its residents.

The completion of Phase I of IKN’s development is an important milestone, marking IKN’s readiness to be inhabited and operated.

With a significant budget allocation for management, it is hoped that IKN can continue to grow according to its initial vision as a smart, green, and sustainable city.
