JERUSALEM, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Hostages held in Gaza were subjected to torture, including sexual and psychological abuse, starvation, burns and medical neglect, according to a new report by the Israeli Health Ministry that will be submitted to the United Nations this week.
- Summary
- Minors bound, beaten and branded, report says
- Women reported sexual assault
- 100 hostages still held in Gaza
The report is based on interviews with the medical and welfare teams which treated more than 100 Israeli and foreign hostages, most of whom were released in late November 2023, in a brief truce between Israel and Hamas. Eight hostages were rescued by the Israeli military.
The hostages include more than 30 children and teenagers, a few of whom were found to have been bound, beaten or branded with a heated object, according to the report addressed to the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture and published late on Saturday.
Women reported sexual assault by the captors, including at gunpoint. Men were beaten, starved, branded, held bound in isolation and denied access to a bathroom, the report said. Some were denied treatment for injuries and medical conditions.
The report did not identify any of the hostages by name or age, to protect their privacy, but some of the descriptions matched those provided by hostages and staff that treated them in interviews with Reuters and other media and a U.N. report.
Hamas has repeatedly denied abuse of the 251 hostages abducted from Israel during its Oct. 7, 2023 assault. About half of the 100 hostages still held in Gaza are believed by Israeli authorities to still be alive.
A fresh bid to secure a Gaza ceasefire including a hostage deal has gained momentum in recent weeks, although no breakthrough has been reported as yet.
The war began with Hamas' October 2023 attack, in which 1,200 people were killed, most of them civilians, according to Israeli authorities.
Israel's subsequent campaign against Hamas has killed more than 45,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to Palestinian health officials, displaced nearly all of Gaza's population and reduced much of its territory to rubble.
Israeli authorities are investigating allegations of abuse against Palestinian detainees arrested during the war.
Even if Muslim countries were to put up a joint front to help the Palestinians they’re not capable of imposing a military solution at a time when the US and NATO are willing to use their full power, including nuclear weapons, to support the Jewish genocide of Palestinian women and children.
On the contrary, I don't think even with full American involvement in a full blown regional war, either America or Israel could 'win' that war. Yes, the Middle East would be destroyed but there would tens of thousands of American body bags and Israel would cease to exist. What kind of 'victory' would that be?? The Pentagon still has professional brains in it, unlike the paid for US Congress, and they know the consequences of full blown regional war.
But it is a moot point because no country, with the exception of the Yemenis, are willing to sacrifice themselves for the Palestinians.
PS. I believe some major heat coming to Iran within the Trump administration unless Iran too become another Jordan.
That is not possible. If you are a believer in scriptures, divinity has ordained permanent warfare in that region. It is a 4000-year-old story.
The key to your statement is that the region will be destroyed but America won’t win.
The thing is, I don’t consider that to be a victory for Palestinians, Arabs, or Muslims. To be destroyed while the enemy suffers zero damage to their homeland and minor damage to their military. For example, if the US came from the other side of the world, occupied Afghanistan, killed millions, sat there for decades and then left, that I don’t consider a victory for the Afghans as they claim. A victory is to inflict more damage on your enemy than they inflict on you.
Similarly, to say that the Palestinians in Gaza are winning when the death ratio is 250 Palestinians to one Israeli is not correct.
Victory can only be declared when the enemy civilization collapses and is cast into the dustbin of history and your civilization prospers for the next few centuries. That I believe will happen, inshallah, but only with divine help.
The scriptures I subscribe to don’t say anything about the region being cursed to permanent warfare. It fact, the region has been called blessed. The only times that there’s been excessive bloodshed after the time of the Romans was during the Crusades and since the formation of Israel.
Interestingly, the Romans, the Crusaders, and the Zionists, all came from Europe to kill the indigenous people of the region.
For 1400 years of Muslim rule there was no warfare or mass slaughter. Jerusalem is considered as sacred as Mecca and Medina and if it was under Muslim rule the mosque would have been a massive structure of white marble like the mosques in Mecca and Medina. And there would have been peace.
You forgot about the Mongolians. Yeah sure Europeans did bad stuff too, but we must not forget that some East Asians are capable of even worser atrocities too. Mongols and Japanese are both from East Asia and their wartime atrocities are so appalling it's almost the same as the Nazis and King Leopold of Belgium...
