It will be damn interesting if they can have the tail-fins behave that way. I am not convinced as i dont see how they can maintain structural integrity with that level of freedom of movement. I am hopeful it is true, that is real innovation and progress for sure, but it feels unrealistic to me ?

Well some people say the ability change at least part of the overall shape of the plane(even if temporarily) is a key feature of 6th generation.

I think it may not be possible due to the huge aerodynamic forces that would then be exerted on the "new taiplane" but the way materials science is progressing I would not rule it out.

In essence, only when the 6th generation fighter gets to a stage where it needs huge manoeuverabililty will the tail plane be "created" and then used for at least the time it takes for its necessary use,

Recently, an early paper came to light on Chinese social media.

Since the paper is in all Chinese and uses a lot of specialized terminology, I will not repost the full text. If you are interested, please go to the Chinese platform to search by yourself.

The paper heavily analyzes the views and analyses of professionals in the U.S. military and aviation academia. He does not directly state his own views and China's future development trends, but analyzes much of the information we know in depth. As a military fan, reading this paper carefully can help us understand a lot of specialized knowledge more deeply.

In the latest talkshow Yankee says:

1) J-36 will not be a Mach 3 capable aircraft.
2) Yankeesama has talked briefly with J-36 Chief Designer Wang Haifeng.
3) Chief Designer care not much about hard specs such as top speed, max thrust, etc. The important criteria of the fighter is instead power generation capability.
4) J-36 can serve as EW and AWAC to some capacity.
5) No pulsed detonation engine or ramjet on J-36. They can’t provide enough power to even existing fighter aircraft avionics, let alone something as sophisticated as CHAD.
6) Engine design no longer focuses on thrust alone. What’s more important is subsystem for power generation under whole flight envelope. Power regulation system is therefore of foremost importance. An example would be NEV vs ICE or F-15 vs MiG-25.
7) Variable cycle engine will conform to J-36’s design.
8) Yankee once again agrees with SDF assessment that the J-36 is not a simple fighter, fighter bomber, bomber, etc. but a new system altogether. It is more akin to an air based cruiser.
I have some questions about his comments.
1. I checked his self-introduction.
yankeesama. a native of Dandong, Liaoning, born in the 1990s, studied at Harbin Institute of Technology, majoring in aircraft power engineering, and at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, majoring in aircraft manufacturing, and is a reporter for a number of military media outlets.
He is not a well-known military journalist. Analyzing from his self-introduction, he does have some professional knowledge. However, he has never been without actual professional work experience, nor has he worked for an authoritative official military media outlet. This information suggests that he does not have deep access to the core research and development personnel of China's military industry. He may know Wang Haifeng, but Wang Haifeng certainly does not know him.
2. During this period, those who knew the details were bound by a strict discipline of secrecy. It was impossible for them to contact any non-top official media.
3, As for some of the details he said, I won't comment. I suggest those who are interested to go and read that paper above first.
 
This is painted 36011, at least 3rd full-size prototype. I expect the 1st batch to look very much the same. This isn't its maiden flight, obviously timed for the next POTUS.

Why do you think so? the 11 just denotes it as the second "variant" and so maybe that strange delta we saw two years ago was 36001 and thee was never a 002?

By the way, as I said, CGs, sketches or drawings of the SAC design are rare so far 🤨... yesterday the great animation by @xmszeon on X and today I found this on FB.

That model looks a beauty, I prefer the look of the J50 over the J36. Also if that tail can move like that in reality, wow!!

China's 6th-gen fighter targets unmatched stealth, claim Chinese scientists

China recently unveiled two advanced stealth aircraft, believed to be sixth-generation designs, potentially challenging India and the US in maintaining air superiority​

China's next-generation fighter jet programme, which reportedly achieved a significant milestone in December with the test flight of two distinct prototypes believed to be sixth-generation aircraft, aims to push the boundaries of stealth material technology to make an aircraft invisible to radars across multiple angles and all frequency bands, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on Tuesday, citing scientists involved in the project.

The programme is reportedly focused on defeating multi-angle radar illumination across all frequency bands. To test the stealth coatings, the project team told SCMP that they devised evaluation criteria far more stringent than even those used by the Chinese military, the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

What stealth capabilities will China's sixth-generation jets possess?​


The updated testing standard is said to incorporate criteria previously considered unachievable. Stealth materials are now required to be lightweight and thin, capable of absorbing high-frequency electromagnetic waves from advanced military radars, while also effectively neutralising low-frequency signals emitted by anti-stealth radars.

The report further highlights that the materials must sustain consistently low radar detection across multiple angles. Additionally, even the faint electromagnetic waves emanating from the aircraft engine's exhaust nozzle must be examined to evaluate the effectiveness of the stealth coating applied within the engine.

According to the SCMP report, this standard "provides a comprehensive and precise evaluation method for assessing the absorbing performance of stealth materials across all frequency bands". The report cites the team's research paper, published on November 25 in the peer-reviewed journal Advances in Aeronautical Science and Engineering. The team is headed by Zhou Hai, a researcher in the stealth department of the AVIC Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute.

According to SCMP, the aircraft described in the paper closely aligns with what is believed to be one of China's new stealth fighters, reportedly captured in videos and images flying over Chengdu, Sichuan province, on December 26—the birth anniversary of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic of China. Both aircraft reportedly feature an aerodynamic design resembling the fan-shaped leaf of the ginkgo tree.

These aircraft, which are thought to be sixth-generation designs, demonstrate China's rapid progress in aerospace technology and pose significant challenges to India and the United States (US) in maintaining air superiority.

Two distinct stealth aircraft designs were reportedly undergoing flight testing. The War Zone identified the larger design as likely developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) and the smaller one by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC). What do we know about China’s larger stealth jet?​

According to military experts cited in the report, the larger tailless design seen in social media posts could potentially be the world's first publicly unveiled sixth-generation fighter jet, powered by three engines.

Speculation surrounds the new-generation Chinese fighter jet, referred to in the research paper as a "multifunctional carrier". It is believed to be designed for versatile roles, capable of engaging in air combat while also striking targets on the ground, at sea, and even in space. Some experts suggest it may also function as a command platform for electronic warfare or controlling drone swarms.

Its success will largely depend on its stealth capabilities. According to the report, current anti-stealth radars can already detect fifth-generation fighter jets like the F-35 from significant distances, partly due to electromagnetic signals interacting with components such as the engine’s intake and compressor blades, leading to weak scattering.

The report also highlights that the effectiveness of existing stealth coatings in absorbing electromagnetic waves varies greatly depending on the angle and frequency of the waves, often causing reduced performance. This challenge is cited as one of the primary technological hurdles delaying the development of the US' sixth-generation fighter jet programme, NGAD.

Sixth-generation aircraft are expected to surpass current fifth-generation platforms like the American F-22 and F-35, the Chinese J-20, and India’s under-development Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) in both stealth and lethality. These next-generation jets are envisioned to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence, drone integration, and state-of-the-art electronic warfare capabilities. At present, India does not possess an operational fifth-generation stealth jet, with the 4.5-generation Dassault Rafale remaining the most advanced combat aircraft in the Indian Air Force's (IAF's) fleet.

We are also curious about the pod that appears to be for data collection or photography on the J-20S, but if we think about it simply, the next-generation prototype is called 3601, which means that the official name is planned to be J-36.
It´s resembles closely to an ECM equipment not a picture pod!!!. Could it work for masking the IRS print?
 
While I check the Western English-language media regularly, I don't usually retweet them.
I don't know where nationalinterest.org belongs in English-language military media circles or how well they are recognized by my friends in the English-speaking world.
I read this article carefully. I get the impression that the author has very limited military analytical skills. At least, that's what he shows in this article.
