US could slap 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports from February 1​

The US could impose tariffs of 25 per cent on Mexican and Canadian imports from February 1, Donald Trump said, as he signed a raft of executive orders just hours after his presidential inauguration.

“We’re thinking in terms of 25 per cent on Mexico and Canada because they’re allowing vast numbers of people — Canada’s a very bad abuser also — vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in,” Trump said in the Oval Office on Monday evening.

“I think we’ll do it February first,” he told reporters.

Trump would not set a date for possible tariffs on Chinese imports, saying that would be subject to more discussions.
