China hits back at Canada with fresh agriculture tariffs

Chinese gov would be just pure stupid if it trusts all those "friendly" words uttered by the orange man now, we have seen enough of what him was really like in his first term.

Rest assured, we don't trust Trump. He just wants to fix the inflation problem first and then deal with us.

His economists probably gave him a reality check on what impact tariffs would have on American consumers so he is backing down from his firebrand campaign rhetoric.

Some compromise will be reached.

Tariff will impact whole world, particularly in relation to Fed interest rate.

US wants China buy more US goods. If this is the one that happen, then every body will happy. Only then China needs to buy more expensive goods from US, and those whose exports to China effected ( most propably agricultural exports ) will not happy

The problem is the US doesn't want to sell many products such as semiconductors and high tech products that China wants, but it wants to sell products such as more agricultural grains and energy gases that China doesn't really want or already has good supplies from others. This is the root cause of the huge trade imbalances, can't blame China.

China cant be blamed as it is market system that is applied in international market, but US wants to pressure China due to its giant market that absorb many Chinese products

Tariff will be devastating to many countries as it make US inflation sticky thus less cut from The Fed after long tight money policy being implemented.

Trump said prefer the fall of global interest rate to support global economy, so I assumed he prefer to boost US products export to China while as you said he still restrict US technology to China

The only thing Trump managed to get from China was a contract promising to buy some soybeans and corns in 2018, which soon became invalid. He is not really a good negotiator as he claims to be

I don't hope for it.

It will end in disasters.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said his conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week was friendly and he thought he could reach a trade deal with China.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

The leaders of the world's two biggest economies discussed issues including TikTok, trade and Taiwan in a phone call before Trump took office on Monday.

Since taking office, Trump has spoken about a 10% punitive duty on Chinese imports because he says fentanyl is being sent from China to the U.S. via Mexico and Canada. However, he did not immediately impose tariffs as he had promised during his election campaign. Trump has also threatened tariffs against the European Union, Mexico and Canada.

KEY QUOTES

"It went fine. It was a good, friendly conversation," Trump said of his call with Xi in an interview with Fox News aired on Thursday evening.

"I can do that," Trump said in the interview when asked if he could make a deal with China over fair trade practices.

Trump said he would rather not use tariffs against China but called tariffs a "tremendous power."

"But we have one very big power over China, and that's tariffs, and they don't want them, and I'd rather not have to use it, but it's a tremendous power over China," Trump added.

CONTEXT

The U.S. and China are embroiled in an array of diplomatic and economic disagreements, including an accelerating technological and military rivalry, bitter trade disputes and Washington's concerns with the ownership of famous social media app TikTok, whose parent company is Chinese firm ByteDance.

Chinese would be fools if now trust anything come out his mouth about China and Xi, we had seen enough of his talking and acting in his first term to know what is he really like.

America was fools giving China most favored nation status years ago and opened trade with China.

Lol, why you people buy Chinese products crazy for all those years if they are junk ? Your so called most favored nation status is only in name, applies to nearly all countries on earth, US trades with China certainly is not out of pure kindness to China if you don't benefit too. It's easy and correct to bad mouth everything Chinese now, lol.

Me? I buy American whenever I can. My father shops for work clothes at Amish stores.

Others? Well, they are about to find out in a day or two the crap from China is about to get more expensive. (The following may explain UPS' recent decision to downsize)
