9 out of the 10 longest subway systems in the world are located in China. This means that China has the most extensive subway network globally

Beijing adds 3 new metro lines, further easing downtown traffic
Updated: December 16, 2024 09:59 Xinhua

BEIJING, Dec. 15 -- Three new metro lines opened on Sunday in Beijing, adding the city's total urban rail transit length to 879 kilometers, ranking first among Chinese metropolitans.

Wu Yulan, an official of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, said that the three sections of metro lines include one east-west underground corridor through the city, which is also connected to many north-south rail transit lines, giving new options for people in big residential areas in the city.

Wu said Beijing's rail transit network currently boasts 522 stations, including 98 interchange stations.

Beijing has taken measures to ease traffic congestion by building more subway lines, which provide mass rapid transit solutions in the sprawling metropolis. Since Beijing Metro Line 1 was officially opened on Oct. 1, 1969, to become China's first urban rail transit, Beijing has built the country's longest-operating urban rail transit network.

Wu said the extending rail transit network was developed to serve a better life for the people and to pursue high-quality development in the city.

Beijing subway network extends 879 km (546 mi) across 12 urban and suburban districts of Beijing and into one district of Langfang in neighboring Hebei province. Between December 2023 and December 2024, the Beijing Subway became the world's longest metro system by route length, surpassing the Shanghai Metro.

It was reported that Shanghai's subway network just reached 896 kilometers (557 miles) in January 2025, overtaking Beijing's again.

In many sectors, Chinese cities and provinces are just competing against themselves, foreign competitors are no longer in the race.

@Beijingwalker

I wonder, how many cities in China have subway lines?
59 cities by the end of 2023
截至2024年9月29日,中国已开通的城市轨道交通系统共有94个。截至2023年12月31日,全国运营轨道交通的城市共有59个,运营里程累计达11232.65公里。

Top 10 , Shanghai regained the first place with 896 kilometers. Beijing 879

59 cities???

That is crazy!!!

Building 1 line of subway in a city, for most countries is already a massive project.

Let alone if they also want to build a High Speed Railway line too.

Despite being ranked second overall in worldwide subway usage (after the Shanghai Metro) as of 2019, subways make up a relatively small fraction of heavy rail rapid transit in Tokyo alone—only 286 out of 938 railway stations, as of 2020.

Tokyo's subway in China probably won't make top 20

Have you been to Tokyo? I've just returned to Tokyo and I don't see the difference between subways and other rail transit options.

Tokyo has a shorter metro than Singapore or KL based on Wikipedia lol. Quite meaningless.

The total rail length in Tokyo metropolitan area increased from 1,566 kilometres in 1956 to 2,705 kilometres in 2015, while the number of stations increased from 807 in 1956 to 1,510 in 2015.

Shinjuku station was used by an average of 3.59 million people per day in 2018, making it the world's busiest railway station by far (and registered as such with Guinness World Records).[1] The main East Japan Railway Company (JR East) station and the directly adjacent private railways have a total of 35 platforms, an underground arcade, above-ground arcade and numerous hallways with another 17 platforms (53 total) that can be accessed through hallways to five directly connected stations without surfacing outside. The entire above/underground complex has well over 200 exits.
