I think its more than that. There is a general proclivity towards Russia that the Far Right Euroskeptic types have. You see it with the AfD, Reform UK, Salvini, Le Penn.
In Trump and the Christian Right in the US, they see Russia as closer to them socially than the Socially Liberal Western Europe, and in the case of the China Hawks, the strategy seems to be to withdraw from the European Theatre to boost resources/deployment in the Pacific as well as somehow Turn Russia away from China.
Its looking more and more like the Taiwan front will be activated soon preemptively by China, before the US gets the chance to redeploy from Europe to the Pacific and try to corner China in the 1st Island chain.
