The question was really about POTUS, not local council or lower level. For a credible POTUS run, you need to be in one of the two major parties. Again, Trump had the money and the media savvy but he knew what he had to do.

P.S. Could a third party become powerful enough to join the club? Maybe, but we are talking about the current situation.

It takes a party with local and regional presence first. Skyscrapers do need foundations first on this planet. Usually.

Absolutely. You need a countrywide infrastructure. The two parties already have that, but a third party can surely build one in time.

Again, lots of things are theoretically possible but the current ground reality is what it is.

There are no shortcuts to building a tall building. There is plenty of space for anyone to start their own tower if they want. That is all I can say.
