Que up Monty Hall: Let's make a deal
@Musings , sir, perhaps you can help merge threads? Unless you enjoy locking that is?
I think the damage was already being done.
USA and China relationship won't be the same, especially in China side.
Tariffs 104 + 125 = 229%!!!
I don't think it will be in the short term, it will be like that in the very, very long term.
I can say USA and China are decoupling in the real meaning.
SEC (Security and Exchange Commission) would have a tough time ahead in the next 90 days to filter out all potential insider trading purchase.Trump in a Truth Social post says he is “immediately” raising U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports to 125% “based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets.”
But Trump in the same post says he has “authorized a 90 day PAUSE” for other countries, pointing to what he says are more than 75 nations who have reached out to negotiate.
That pause, and “a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%,” are both “effective immediately,” Trump writes.
Maybe. Maybe not.SEC (Security and Exchange Commission) would have a tough time ahead in the next 90 days to filter out all potential insider trading purchase.
This is a pump and dump at the highest level, literally the president is using his executive power to manipulate the stock market. Mind you, this is not over, he didn't cancel the tariff, he delayed it for 90 days, which mean we may be looking at another pump and dump in 90 days' time.
Again, it wouldn't really matter if 150 countries kissing his hairy ol behind unless the top 5 countries we had trade deficit with play along, otherwise we are still looking at 70% of the trade deficit to back fire if those country don't make deal. And 2 of them, the biggest one, EU and China (alone is about 30-35% of all US Trade deficit) already ruled out any deal, and Trump goes a whopping 125% now, I don't see the Chinese backing down, it's going to raise the game.Maybe. Maybe not.
Bad enough the market makers pump and dump on their own accord. Not sure they would try and do so a second time.
There will be some agreements made.
China can start to sell weapons to Russia when there is no trade between China and US. The next step would be US kicking China out of SWIFT system. Then China takes Taiwan. Cold War 2.0 officially kicks off.

EU already set 25% tariff back, that may or may not be implement now with the delay, I am expecting Canada to follow suit after the next General Election unless Carney is not in, because he is running this platform that give him the resurgence, he won't drop it now if he got re-elected , which mean Mexico (110 billions deficit) and Vietnam (130 billion deficit) is the sole unknown player that can go either way, which still mean if these two countries don't go along with the other 3, you are still looking at 40-45% of the 1.2 Trillion deficit in play, that still a big number.
On the other hand, this is a pump and dump no doubt, Trump knows this is going to crash the market, if he wants more time to negotiate, he will set the tariff in effect 90 days after he announce it last week, instead of announcing it now and roll it back later. He will most definite do it again in 90 days time if this is going to be heading that way, unless by some miracle country like Vietnam and Cambodia or Lesotho can really address the trade balance, which means they either buy more American stuff or sell less to America, this is not going to change the calculus, which mean you actually want this to be just a pump and dump because at least after however many rounds this game being played, he wouldn't go after those country that will simply extend our trade deficit because we would still be buying a levi jean sourced from Lesotho and a pair of Air Jordan made in Vietnam, it will just be 50% more expensive.
