Well there’s a surprise . We all knew that was going to happen , didn’t we. Trump is so predictable in his stupidity.

WRONG!!! Trump is surrounded by the advisors from administration / establishment. He is just an announcer. Even statements attributed to him are written by someone else. And Trump is too senile to understand what effect his words have.

Trump's ego is too big to take orders from anybody else. He asks people for advice but only to hear what he has already decided. He surrounds himself with yes men and women.

China has advanced too far to be stopped by the US now. The US still doesn't understand that China is fundamentally different from the US. Unlike the US, China is huge enough to sustain it's R&D and economic advancement by itself.

It's also funny considering Republican are generally for business, and with conservative economic strategy, which basically is invest everywhere. While Democrats are more worker and union orientated, I don't know if you had watch that Nancy Pelosi 1996 video doing the same thing Trump was doing, laying out the board and talk about we need to shorten the trade deficit and get more manufacturing back to the US from China (it was around 34 billion before) and the Republicans were the one booing her. And no just 30 years later, the two parties swapped places.

America will never recover from his mess unless Americans call for him to resign or step down from office. Then I wonder even if he steps down probably another lunatic waiting in the wings in his party to replace him?

I thought Trump was supposed to be a hard nosed negotiator. Less than a day after he told the world that everyone was “kissing his arse” yuck to get a deal he folds. Weakling , Pathetic, he couldn’t even negotiate free sprinkles on an ice cream.

LOL, the tariff pause has NOTHING to do with kissing anyone's ass. I suspect Trump got some calls from his Magnificent 7 and other tech bros, and other people whole stock portfolio got hammered, and decided to capitulate to them.

As I wrote few days back:

American companies cannot sustain their stratospheric valuations based on domestic consumption alone; they need to dominate the global market.

Along with the ever-present threat of American sanctions, we now have the threat of American tariffs. There will certainly be a rethink of the supply chains around the world, but the results may not be what Trump expected.

A cold piece of knowledge. The U.S. didn't actually give China much time. China really only got 3 years.

in 2001 China joined the World Trade Organization, in 2002 China was closed because of the SARS epidemic. in 2006, the US re-imposed massive sanctions on China under the pretext of dumping. So, in fact, the only time China really got normal treatment was in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

China's growth rates for those three years were 11.5%, 12.7%, and 14.2%. In these three years China has rapidly completed the reform of state-owned enterprises, turning all these loss-making enterprises into powerful conglomerates. In these three years, China's foreign exchange reserves have risen from $280 billion to $1.1 trillion, and it has completely gotten rid of its debt crisis.

So it's not that the Americans were stupid enough to give China too much time. Rather, it is that the Chinese government is far more efficient and capable than normal people can imagine.

I'm just curious now, in the coming days, what the Chinese steps will be. President Xi, too, is a strong man figure, and he wouldn't lower himself just like Trump.

That is true. The first Trump administration gave the Chinese a massive push to invest more in homegrown tech, which is on its way to dominating the coming decade.

Once the Americans opened the door, it was never going to close again. If I remember correctly, the first action of the Chinese was to send overseas students to attain higher education, bring them back, and develop the needed education backbone. President Xi spent time in the United States countryside.

One thing I like about Chinese planning is how every five years, they reevaluate their position and guide the country, from an agrarian society to a developed technological one, at a rapid pace not seen in a civilization before. More importantly, they are absorbing information and acting upon it.

People talk about corporate exploitation in the West but plenty of companies in other countries are also making obscene profits while paying little to their workers. These suppliers can reduce their profits and fight to become competitive.

I am not talking about the 104% tariff but the other 10-40% range tariffs.

Chinese suppliers work on very tight margins. They earn base on volume and efficiency. If they can still make a profit, they will absorb it, else they will just not sell. Simple economics.

Worth watching is a recent video by the 'China Uncensored' guy Chris Chappell in his other channel 'America Uncensored'. Per him, the widespread tariffs are to force other countries to reduce trading with China.

Look be realistic, how the heck are people going to cut trading with China. We are not just the biggest exporter, we are also the largest importer. Trump's aim had always been JOBS. He wants those JOBS back in the USA, goods now, services later.

Maybe you are right, though I need you to be wrong! Haha!

I don't know much about trade/commerce/finance but my 'hunch' says that what Trump is doing right now might work after short to medium term pain; but then people in America are so spoiled that even very short term pain will be politically too much and thus Trump reverses a chunk of the tariffs (but still targetting China, because the goal is to isolate China).
