China hits back at Canada with fresh agriculture tariffs

Wall Street Journal: ‘China called Trump’s bluff and seems to have won this round’

by Dominick Mastrangelo - 04/24/25 10:04 AM ET

The Wall Street Journal editorial board thinks China is winning the trade war against the U.S. and President Trump, according to its latest essay.

“The good news is that at least Mr. Trump is finally listening to reality,” the Journal wrote in an editorial published Wednesday. “There couldn’t have been a clearer market test in the last three weeks about the economic damage these columns warned about. The MAGA media echo chamber that praised Mr. Trump’s tariffs as strategic genius looks foolish.”

Another “harsh reality” the Journal added, “is that China called Mr. Trump’s bluff and seems to have won this round.”

The board drew comparison to the president’s first term, explaining that Chinese President Xi Jinping retaliated with some restraint and later sent a delegation to negotiate.

“The question going forward is whether Mr. Trump is internalizing these economic and political lessons or merely pausing to fight his trade war another day,” the Rupert Murdoch-owned outlet continued. “We doubt even Mr. Trump knows the answer, since so much of his decision-making is ad hoc.”

The Journal has routinely ridiculed Trump over his trade policies and economic agenda in recent weeks, slamming him for the negative impact it has had on markets during his first 100 days in office.

The president has dismissed such criticisms from the Journal, saying the newspaper has been “dead wrong” about his policies and separately accusing Murdoch of trying to “tear him down.”

The latest critique comes after Trump suggested negotiations were underway that could significantly lessen the 145 percent tariffs on Beijing. China rebutted the claims Thursday, calling them “groundless.”

So, the negotiation news is fake.

It's one-sided.

Trump keeps claiming he’s working on a deal with China. Beijing says that it is all in his mind

‘Any claims about the progress of China-U.S. trade negotiations are groundless as trying to catch the wind and have no factual basis,’ a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce said

President Donald Trump touted that the United States and China were at the negotiating table to reach a resolution to the trade war — but Beijing says that’s not true.

Washington was “actively” having discussions with Beijing this week, and Trump said he planned to be “very nice” to reach a deal. He also called his 145 percent tariff on Chinese goods “too high” and vowed it would “come down substantially.” Two Chinese officials on Thursday contradicted the U.S. president’s claims.

He Yadong, China’s Ministry of Commerce spokesperson, said Thursday: “Any claims about the progress of China-U.S. trade negotiations are groundless as trying to catch the wind and have no factual basis.”

Similarly, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said China is prepared to negotiate only under certain conditions. “China’s attitude is consistent and clear: if you want to fight, we will fight to the end, if you want to talk, the door is open,” he said.

The U.S.’s tariffs on China are the highest of any country, and the nation has reciprocated with 125 percent on American imports.

The Trump administration was considering dropping the levy to 50 percent, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Adding to the conflicting reports was Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who on Wednesday denied the report that the U.S. would slash the tariffs on China and understood that “both sides are waiting to speak to the other.”

“Neither side believes that these are sustainable levels,” he said. “This is the equivalent of an embargo, and a break between the two countries in trade does not suit anyone’s interests.”

Riding on the hope of a de-escalation in the trade war, the stock market rose Wednesday. However, stock futures tumbled on Thursday morning after investors heard some mixed messaging from Washington and Beijing.

Some experts believe that there will be some fluctuation in the markets until there’s a more permanent solution to the tariff talk turbulence.

“While it’s encouraging to hear a more dovish tone on tariffs from the administration, stocks remain range-bound for the time being, as the ultimate goal for markets is either a reversal of the tariffs or significant trade deals,” Gaurav Mallik, chief investment officer of Massachusetts-based Pallas Capital Advisors, told CNBC Thursday. “It can take a few months for corrections to end, and we still believe that this is a correction given the speed of the declines.”

Just now, China’s Ministry of National Defense held a regular press conference.

Reporter: According to reports, the US Secretary of Defense said that China is building a special army to destroy the United States. China's hypersonic missiles can destroy all US aircraft carriers within 20 minutes. Every war game held by the Pentagon has been lost to China. The commander of the US Indo-Pacific Headquarters said that China's production speed of fighter jets and warships is much faster than that of the US military, and it has the strength to prevent the United States from gaining air superiority in the "first island chain". What comments does the spokesperson have?
This is hilarious.

This is the complete opposite and contradicts what a certain user here on the forum says.

Who is right: the Pentagon or this user??? That is the question!!!!!

This is the original text of the spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense at the regular press conference of the Ministry of National Defense of China. It is absolutely official.

As for who you choose to believe, it is up to you.

Please note that the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Defense did not deny the relevant remarks made by the United States.

Just now, at the regular press conference of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun denied that China and the United States are negotiating on the issue of tariffs.

问:近来美方不断释放消息称中美之间正在谈判,甚至将会达成协议。请问您能否证实双方有没有开始谈判?
Q: Recently, the US has been releasing news that China and the US are negotiating and may even reach an agreement. Can you confirm whether the two sides have started negotiations?

A: These are all fake news. As far as I know, China and the United States have not held consultations or negotiations on the tariff issue, let alone reached an agreement. This tariff war was initiated by the United States, and China's attitude is consistent and clear. If you want to fight, we will fight to the end; if you want to talk, the door is open. Dialogue and negotiation must be equal, respectful and mutually beneficial.

Obviously, this is the Trump administration releasing fake news. He is trying to influence the US domestic economy and put pressure on other countries by releasing these fake news.

China is not interested in engaging with the United States under the current circumstances. Even if Trump takes the initiative to reduce or even cancel tariffs now, China may not cancel its tariff countermeasures against the United States soon. In this game, China wants to fight to the end until the United States completely surrenders!
what else did you expect?
Trump is a liar.
He comes into power by lies, threats, coercion, corruption.
He is a felony, a sex offender.
His business fielded 6x bankruptcy.
the US empire is run by a psychopath.

what else did you expect?
Well, China is not expecting anything. In fact, we think that the current situation is exactly what China wants.

BTW. China has been preparing for war since Trump won the presidential election in November 2024.

As a basic assumption, Trump will immediately start an economic war with China once he takes office. China has made all kinds of preparations, and we are fully confident that we will win an absolute victory in this economic war.
In order to prevent Trump from launching military action after the failure of the economic war, China has started military deployment very early.

Trump is not a smart guy.
if a dumb guy has dumb advisers like Narravo, Lutnick, Vance then thing will go wrong.
Trump just blinks because the bosses of walmart, costco tell him US supermarkets will run empty in 2 weeks.
Incredible
I previously thought the US had stocks for months, or years not 2 weeks.

China's State Council's Trade War Study Group was established back in 2020 and has been preparing for a second trade war for five years. During those five years, China has invested in significant infrastructure and ports in countries like Brazil. Within two weeks of the start of the trade war, China signed a soybean deal with Brazil, a North American oil deal with Canada, a beef deal with Australia, and a natural gas deal with the UAE.

China has replaced all four major categories of U.S. exports to China with great efficiency. And Trump is still waiting for a call from China at the White House. Trump has still not formed a working group to address commodity supply chain substitution until now, nor has he organized domestic U.S. companies to prepare and invest in production. Americans may have actually elected a Russian spy as president, lol.

“I DON’T do it for the money. I’ve got enough, much more than I’ll ever need. I do it to do it. Deals are my art form. Other people paint beautifully on canvas or write wonderful poetry. I like making deals, preferably big deals. That’s how I get my kicks.
Most people are surprised by the way I work. I play it very loose. I don’t carry a briefcase. I try not to schedule too many meetings. I leave my door open. You can’t be imaginative or entrepreneurial if you’ve got too much structure. I prefer to come to work each day and just see what develops.”

Excerpt From
Trump: The Art of the Deal
Donald J. Trump
The problem is even in his first term, he didn't get any deals。 China 'promised' to buy more on a non-binding agreement but in the end, it was not even close. Trump just wants a media face saving win and people understood it by now. He is just ego maniac. Look at all his 'deals', NK flopped, Ukraine flopped, China flopped, Canada/Mexico flopped.

USA is making a big mistake by kicking China out of USA economy, especially out of USD.

Kill the duck that lays the golden eggs.

USA thinks this will make USA great again.

To be honest, just use logic and do some simple math, the opposite is happening.

It's a blessing that China is playing by the US rules.

Once China is out, goodbye USA!
