California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and even up into Nevada, Utah, and Colorado were all settled by the Spanish.

During the Mexican-American War, which Mexico lost, they ceded that territory to the US. Later, as the railroads were expanding, the US PURCHASED the land from Mexico along what is today's southern border running approximately from El Paso to Yuma to accommodate the rail lines.
 
I do recall "Spanish" was recognized as 2nd Language even in California state , you can get served if you spoke in Spanish at Banks and other offices

USA's attitude toward Spanish language was quite Liberal up to 2008

Free Trade between Mexico-USA , so you would even have food sellers driving into USA with some vegetables to sell to folks buying vegetables beside the street
 
As a San Diegan I was raised to dislike LA sport teams and even LA itself (friendly dislike) but as I became an adult I saw LA for what it really was and that is a cesspool.

Man I remember in the late 90's (still a kid) I forgot where I read it (early internet) but that is when I was getting into geopolitical stuff and the story goes US businessmen were talking with Chinese "officials" and the topic of Taiwan came up where (the story goes) the chinese were upset that in 96 Clinton intervene during China Taiwan standoff and the chinese said that if a war ever broke out and US got involved china would nuke LA and supposedly these US corporate men started laughing and told the chinese that you would be doing the US a favor. Lol. Like Maynard said LA needs to be flushed away.

Spanish is openly spoken in many places. Even in areas where you wouldn't expect it. I've no problem with it.

What I have a problem with is our government. They, as in both sides of the aisle, are responsible for this mess.

I've been watching this get worse since the days when "Simpson-Mazzoli" was signed into law. Then, add in the "War on Drugs", and the only thing that has been achieved is what they wanted all along:

- more government regulation
- bigger government

And the problem still exists. They don't want to fix it.

I blame Reagan for his amnesty bull cht in 1986. That truly opened the door for illegals.

LA has mini riots every weekend with street takeovers where they run amuck in cars and cops don't do anything about.
