The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria, has a fascinating story.

Originally an Iron Age temple dedicated to the Aramean god Hadad, it transformed into a Roman temple for Jupiter.

Later, under Byzantine rule, it became a Christian cathedral.

Following the Muslim conquest in 634 AD, part of the cathedral was repurposed as a prayer house before being converted into a mosque in 705 AD.

It is believed to house the burial site of John the Baptist's head.

Despite enduring damage from Timur's destruction in 1401 and a devastating fire in 1893, it still stands as an awe-inspiring place.
