All crew are advised not to accept levels below FL260 while overflying Pakistan airspace. This is in reference to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency(EASA) circular as below:
Description:
Due to the current security situation in Pakistan with the presence of violent non state actor groups with confirmed anti-aviation weaponry, possibly MANPADS (man portable air-defence systems), there is a continued possible threatto civil aviation resulting in a HIGH risk to operation at altitudes below FL 260.

Recommendation(s):
EASA advises air operators not to conduct flights over FIR Karachi (OPKR) and FIR Lahore (OPLR) below FL 260

***Pilots have been advised not to fly below 26,000 feet over Pakistani airspace due to questionable security situation in Pakistan. The advisory was issued by Europe Union's regulatory authority EASA.

I am highlighting this as most airlines on long-haul flights operate between 35 to 41000 feet and there are rumours of this 26k figure being revised. If it starts approaching 35000 feet then Pakistani airspace would become unusable to majority of the airline operators. This will result in massive revenue loss for Route Navigation charges to Pakistan, plus also damage the reputation of the Pak govt., PAF and PA.

Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) effective 1st Feb 2024

European Union has declared Karachi and Lahore FIR(Flight Information Regions) to be "Conflict Zones".

P.S. This advisory was issued BEFORE the elections, so nothing to do with elections and subsequent violence.

Is this different to a NOTAM, which is standard practice around these parts, spl in India off the Andhra, Odisha coasts where they do most missile tests, rocket launches.

NOTAM are issued on ergular basis and wtr information shared by the authority controlling the airspace.

This is an advisory issued by a regulator for aircrafts registered in its own authorities while operating in foreign airspace. These advisories are issued usually for warzones.

What possible risk could there be ? we know of the ongoing political situation but nothing that would warrant this kind of thing to aircraft generally flying 30-40k + feet above.

One of the first missions of the US SF teams into Afghanistan was to find, destroy or buy back any stingers and other mpads they could get their hands on.
