Well Russia DID try to help. As you said, they had basesTheir was, look at Syria, Russia at the request of Bashar Al Assad sent their airforce and strong troops to fight the rebels. Iran was 10x bigger ally than Syria.
Iran can only go for Peace if the US also directs Israel to stop its actions in Gaza and elsewhere. Otherwise, even if Peace is achieved by Iran, it will not last at all. As soon as the next attack is done by Israel on Iran, everything will go to hell. Also, if Israel backs off from Iran but keeps attacking Gaza, then everyone's patience will run out again, in a few weeks.Well Iran is in a bind, they will have to play what cards they have left.
Like I said - the cards are
A) Peace
B) War
What does Peace look like ? what are the concessions?
War - well we know that is going to be a protracted mess.
the War part is Iran's choice, but giving Iran the option of "Peace" is more dependent on the US actions from here on, in controlling Israel's actions.
