A prize means very little. However stopping the killing of large numbers of innocent people is a big deal.

I'm not going to ask why, because Iran would obviously never pose a threat to China, and historically speaking Iran has never been hostile to China in our thousands of years of history, but even if so, there is no evidence that Iran has had a nuclear weapons program after 2003. I'm sure both China and Russia knew that quite well.

The reason is not quite for the fear of Iran's possible nuke threat. The reasons for China's voting water-downed sanctions are more complicated as outlined in the short article, in the end, it might served Iranian interests too.
