Oho, Amritsan ke golden temple ki srounding dukano se toh maine bhi li a tha maal.. a sword, a few kripans, ornamental or outrright deadly..We Parsis, happily, really are mad. Not sanki. Frank mad.
Late 80s (or early 90s maybe) ki kahani. Post Bluestar etc. Sab finally thanda.
This team of elite bawa cyclists, from Poona and Bombay, guys and girls, national heros, Asiad legends, you'll probably know the names, they go to Patiala for a national camp before the Asian games.
Accha, camp over, everyone has to return home. These johnnies decide to first go and page paro at Golden Temple, before their trains home (no fancy flying in those days, no sir, poor India).
At Golden Temple, they see Sardarjis being given swords. Pretty ornate ones. Bawas get horny. Humko bhi chahiye please!
Sardarjis give them the swords. Everyone maha chuffed and excited.
But bc how to carry full fugin swords in the train?!!! Lol Major brainstorming. Over lots of rum, through the night.
Finally sense prevails, and bawas and bawis forget their Persian genes and leave the swords in safekeeping with local friends. Great sadness and regret. To this day.
Cheers, Doc
skorti uncle had it shipped home but, no chance you get on a train, much less a plane with those, even if in the luggage bay.
