Tensions all over America were high in the summer of 1970. The Nixon administration’s bombing of Cambodia and the continued war in Vietnam were seen by a vocal section of the population to be murderous disasters. Outraged students raised their voice, and in May, the National Guard killed four of them at Kent State and two others at Jackson State. It appeared to some as if the country doubled down on its sins, adding the blood of its own citizens to the mix.

A month later, a group of wealthy and prominent Americans assembled to do something about the national divide. Their mission was not to address the problems behind it, but to invigorate a broad and vague spirit of appreciation for the United States of America. They called it Honor America Day: a massive, entertainment-filled ceremony, to be held in Washington DC on the Fourth of July. For a day, Americans could swap their discontent for waving flags, live music, and old-fashioned pride.

That wasn’t exactly how it went down.

Update (2300ET): A dramatic scene is unfolding on the House floor, as four Republicans have voted 'nay' on the Senate-revised version of the 'Big Beautiful Bill' - when House Speaker Mike Johnson could only afford three.

According to Fox News' Chad Pergram; 'A 216-216 tie loses by rule. Dems got all of their members there and stuck together GOP needs to flip 1 mbr so long as other Republicans don’t vote no.'

5 minutes ago....

Representative David Valadao, Republican of California who visited the White House today, has voted in favor of moving the bill to the House floor. A remarkable move given his previous statements indicating his reluctance to Medicaid changes that will impact more than half of his constituents who rely on the program for their health care. This brings the total yes votes to 208, with 216 no votes on the board. Eight Republicans have yet to vote, and members can change their choices anytime until the voting closes.

@RabzonKhan

Demwits just picked up another seat in the upcoming 2026 elections.
