Trump threatens 100% tariffs on BRICS nations over US dollar replacement plans

Lol, the U.S. goods trade surplus with Brazil was $7.4 billion in 2024, a 31.9 percent increase ($1.8 billion) over 2023. What is Trump's logic ? He must be really irritated by Lula.
Brazil took China's corn and soybean orders. That pisses Trump off more than the trade deficit.

Brazil might impose same rate tariffs on US products. In the end, US might be the one ends losing more since it exports more to Brazil.
If that happens , tariffs for Brazil will go to 100%, just like it happened with China. Brazil will be hurt more than the US relative to the size of their economies. Anyway, with Brazil it is more about politics than economics. It is also a warning to countries like India which are part of BRICS. Countries with leaders that Trump has bad relations with will get bad deals. Bangladesh is another example. Similarly, Pakistan which has sucked up to the Trump administration should get a good deal. India will get a better deal if it leaves BRICS.

Brazil's exports to the U.S. are only $40 billion, which hardly affects them.

Don't expect Brazil to make any compromises, they and the US have completely overlapping economic structures and are direct competitors.

And Brazilians wouldn't agree that South America is America's South America. Especially in a period of increasing US decline.

Brazil was one of the young lions that split the body of the old lion king. Got it?

So what happens to the tariffs war with China of 245% originally ? Trump just being TACO, begged China to reduce the tariffs to 30% level on many products. You think China really care about US tariffs, and who is hurting more with Chinese ban of REM exporting to US. US is not everything in the world, In 2024, Brazil's total exports to the United States reached $40.3 billion, Brazil's total exports to China were valued at $94.41 billion, do the math. When you have a clown president like Trump that makes US important economic decisions and policies based on his personal wild preferences of certain foreign leaders, good luck to US.

Well, Brazil can do the same to Boeing, I guess.

U.S. exports to Brazil are mainly agricultural machinery and large airplanes, both of which are easily substitutable. Brazil has been applying zero tariffs to the United States, and the United States is a surplus country for Brazil. Trump is so funny, he picked another most unsuitable opponent.

Just look at Brazil's export to the US as a percentage of Brazil's GDP and compare to US exports to Brazil as a percentage of US GDP. You will get your answer.

Brazil's economy is very small compared to China and the US. Any comparison to China is irrelevant.

Brazil is a large country with a GDP of over 2 trillion dollars. It doesn't have much of a stake in the United States.

And from a geopolitical point of view, a tariff war with the U.S. and a victory would substantially increase Brazil's prestige and unite South America.

So, Brazil total exports value to US is only equal to about 1.8% of its GDP, nearly as the same percentage of China export to US, clearly US tariffs won't have a big impact on Brazilian economy. It's not like Vietnam's 30% GDP is related to exports to US.

They will have a much bigger impact than any retaliatory Brazilian tariffs will have on the US economy.

Phillipines got the same rate as Vietnam without having to make any extra concessions. It is the relative rate that matters. So far, Vietnam and the Phillipines have a competitive advantage over all their peers.
interesting. Vietnam gives lots of bonbons to the US, while the Philippines nothing, except military bases as far as I see. Trump makes the world to a jungle.

According to Politico, Vietnam may have though they had negotiated a 11% rate and then President Trump announced 20%. I am guessing similar issues are holding up EU and India trade deal announcements.

yes, it seems to be the case, Trump changed his mind in the last minute.

Trump and To Lam held the talk on July, 2 evening, Hanoi time.
as Washington is 11 hours behind of Hanoi, the talk was underway in the morning hours in the US.
Trump however posted the Vietnam agreement at 4:44pm.
That means he changed his decision 4-5 hours after the agreement on the phone with To Lam, on the draft prepared by both goverment teams.

something made Trump to change his decision but he can´t do that.
He makes the US a place of jungle law. there is no trust to any agreement.
