The NY mayoral race is exposing the xenophobia, especially on the democratic establishment side. The nativist streak in the Republican Party is a given; not the whole party, but it’s where the nativists feel most comfortable, claiming to hide behind policy differences when it’s actually blatant xenophobia. The dems were “supposed to be the egalitarian ones”. So much for vote blue no matter who. This race exposes the hypocrisy and many Mamdani voters will need to be wooed back if the establishment screw over Mamdani. So better for them to back Mamdani and moderate his positions than to try to sideline him like they did Bernie.

It is not xenophia, it is just hard-nosed realpolitik. He is not mainstream, not just because of his ethnicity and religion, but also because of his ideological leanings and his lack of serious work experience that would prepare him to serve in the office of Mayor of NYC. He is just not going to be able to get enough votes from moderate voters who don't care about ideology and just want the city to be run properly, especially after the disaster of the last Dem mayor. No one in poliitics wants to back a loser.

Exactly.

I've not been to NYC in several years now. Last time was in Lower Manhattan where our offices were located. Was just absolutely disgusting with all the garbage, etc. Glad it was in January and not July

High(er) taxes to cover social WELFARE programs is not socialism. The Nordic countries repeatedly stated they are capitalist countries.

There are/were plenty of countries who can/have defied US sanctions and dealt with Venezuela. Same with Cuba. One of those countries is Canada. :LOL:

He’s moving the Overton window and enough of the public responded, or else he wouldn’t have won the primary. We will have to see in November if it’s enough of the public to win him the election.

Even Tucker Carlson pointed to the cost of living as the core issue in young people’s minds, more than any other.

The xenophobic rhetoric is also a real factor. Only the Republican, Sliwa, said to focus on his policies, not his faith or ethnicity.
 
Great leadership by Mamdani to meet detractors one on one. He should also do more interviews on Fox, regardless of its bias. He is in a Trump like situation right now where any publicity is helpful.

The xenophobic rhetoric is conveniently weaponised by the American deep state when they want to character assassinate someone's public approval on policies they don't like.

In this case, Mamdani's crime was not being Indian, it was being anti-Israel. Hence the xenophobic greenlight was given.

This is the same that happens when the USA needs to justify supporting a war, suddenly they shift from a politically correct anti-racist society to a tacit approval to weaponise racism.

At least this is how I view it as a non-American.
