It was a different feel at the stadium during those days where the crowd wore their Charger gold shirts. My dad loved the Coryell Chargers. The 2006-2010 was a great experience too even Drew Breese era. Always favored for SuperBowl appearance but they always "chargered" it up in the end.Now in LA. Air Coryell years were the Best![]()
Dan Fouts was one of my all time favourite QBs. His dad was a 49ers radio announcer. It was a different feel at the stadium during those days where the crowd wore their Charger gold shirts. Thanks to YT I've seen almost all his Coryell era games.Dan Fouts was one of my all time favourite QBs. His dad was a 49ers radio announcer.

In 1983 the Chargers had two first round picks in the NFL draft and could have drafted Elway or Marino. Hindsight being 20/20 I'd prefer Marino with what the Chargers offense had in 1983. By that time Fouts was old and at the end of his contract but they resigned him. What could have been... so much so some guy made a YT video of it.
It's like rubbing lemon salt on a wound. This is what we San Diegans mean when we say Chargers chargering
This show started the whole space movie movement
Remember the movie Goldfinger and the character Oddjob. It surprises my American friends that we grew up watching American shows and movies in Pakistan of the 70 and 80s: Star Trek, Star Trek the Next Generation, Trapper John MD, Planet of the Apes, Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, Star Wars, The Exorcist, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Nightmare on Elm Street. When 'The Exorcist' came out to cinemas in Karachi shortly after its release in the 70s, I remember the 'Palace' cinema was sold out for several weeks as we attempted to go there. I think similar was the case with 'The Raiders of the Lost Ark'. And when a 3-D movie (something like 'Treasure of the Seven Kingdoms' ??) came out, then it seems the whole city was talking about that and the special eye glasses.
Pakistan Television (the PTV) maybe the only channel available but it showed American movies and shows quite frequently. Cartoons were very popular: Hackle and Jackle crows, Popeye. Too old memories to recall much. And with our English language not up to it, my dad would translate to the whole family sitting around him watching the tv shows as he carefully tiptoed around the more salacious part of the shows. Haha!
Pakistan was quite a western-looking country being in the American camp for at least its first quarter century of its existence.

You were a lucky guy as your parents provided in full your university stay in the states. And that's how it really should be but unfortunately all are not that lucky.
My parents cobbled up my airline ticket and one year's tuition and said "son the rest is up to you ". I am eternally grateful to them for providing me the opportunity.
Anyways back to Oddjob.
In those halcyon days the INS now ICE had a much humane attitude towards immigration and foreign students. I got permission to work 20 hours a week as long as I maintained a GPA of 3.0. I managed that quite easily through out my university years with a final GPA of 3.46.
Som of the jobs l performed mostly during the night.
711 working the gas station.
Worked in a HVAC warehouse driving a forklift. Really enjoyed this job and learnt a bit about the HVAC business.
Worked in a French restaurant called Magic Pan and this is where l really learnt to cook dishes and sauces.
Obtained a Class 1 licence and drove a Rig for some time. Unfortunately didn't enjoy it too much.
But l really learned a lot about the American way of life.
Overall it was a very satisfying time spent in the USA.
