Trump Announces Major Pakistan Trade Deal, Vows Joint Oil Development/Exploration

19% seems high. Still major agri and textile exports will be 6% cheaper then Indias to US market, nothing to be sneezed at and can give some of our companies a good head start

Firstly, just like I don't know much about military hardware, I don't know much about economy/trade either. I like to believe I am better at connecting the dots, kind of like on a current scatter chart with historic data and possible future dots.

Related to this thread/tariffs, I don't think Americans are warming up to Pakistan for no reason. Yes, partly maybe to coerce India for better terms but Pakistan too is a large country in terms of population, has a potent military, has a vital geopolitical location, and has a long history of working with the Americans and vice/versa. So there is more than mere tariffs.

Pakistan’s largest refiner Cnergyico will import 1 million barrels of oil from Vitol in October, its Vice Chairman Usama Qureshi told Reuters on Friday, marking the country’s first-ever purchase of US crude following a landmark trade deal.

The West Texas Intermediate light crude cargo will be loaded from Houston this month and is expected to arrive in Karachi in the second half of October, Qureshi said.

“This is a test spot cargo under our umbrella term agreement with Vitol. If it is commercially viable and available, we could import at least one cargo per month,” he said, adding that the shipment was not meant for resale.

The deal follows months of multiple negotiations, which first began in April, he said, after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 29pc tariffs on imports from Pakistan.

On Thursday, Pakistan hailed a trade deal struck with the US, its top export market, and said the agreement would increase investments. The White House said on Thursday the US will charge a 19pc tariff on imports from Pakistan.

Qureshi said Pakistan’s finance and petroleum ministries encouraged local refineries to explore US crude imports after the April tariff announcement. Vitol did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside of office hours.

A key China ally, Pakistan has been warming up to Trump after he threatened tariffs. It has credited US diplomatic intervention for ending recent hostilities with neighbouring India and nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Oil is Pakistan’s biggest import item, and its shipments were valued at $11.3 billion in the year ended June 30, 2025, accounting for nearly a fifth of the country’s total import bill.

The import deal will help Pakistan diversify its crude sourcing and reduce reliance on Middle Eastern suppliers, who account for nearly all of its oil imports.

“Gross refining margin is on par with Gulf grades, and no blending or refinery tweaks are required,” Qureshi said.

Cnergyico can process 156,000 barrels of crude per day and operates the country’s only single-point mooring terminal near Karachi, enabling it to handle large tankers, unlike other refiners in Pakistan.

The company plans to install a second offshore terminal to allow larger or more frequent shipments, and to upgrade its refinery over the next five to six years, Qureshi said.

The refiner, which has been operating at an average refinery run rate of 30 to 35pc due to tepid local demand, is betting on growth in demand for oil products.

“We expect run rates to rise as domestic demand strengthens and local production is prioritised over imported fuels,” Qureshi said.

Trump said on Wednesday the US would also cooperate with Pakistan to develop the South Asian country’s “massive oil reserves”, without providing further details.

I suggest you Google "Yaqub Shah minerals LinkedIn"

He is a seasoned geologist whose articles will explain what minerals exist in Pakistan

I know him. He has done some work on Lithium exploration. However, he has no experience with Barrick Gold's team that did exploration and estimation on Gold estimates and few other rare earth minerals of interest to the US. Then there is the Oil on top of all this. So God willing, Pakistan's unstoppable economic climb has started.

You are right. Here is what the US is getting. US is depending upon Chinese rare earth minerals supply. When Trump put 155% tariffs on China, the Chinese banned rare earth minerals and its used in ALL electronics. American industry started to scream, Europeans and Indians all were shaking. China controls over 90% supply!

Through Pakistan, we provide a secondary supplier to the US. So let's say there is a war or something between US-China, we'll continue to sell them the REM's and their electronics industry will continue to function. America = semi conductor / electronics economy. Everything is electronics and computing. So it's a secondary lifeline through Pakistan.

Then comes the growth. To go from $400 to $ 1 trillion economy, A LOT of business has to happen. That's nearly $ 600 billion dollars. American business are saturated in the US, why not jump in and ride with Pakistan? $ 600 million growth is A LOT of money the US businesses can make. In AI and Crypto, we have the labor force, the US can provide it's businesses English speaking sharp talent at a fraction of a cost in AI and Crypto industries. I hope these few things can help you understand how MUCH Pakistan has to offer its trade partners in terms of revenue and profit.

Ah, the old "Is going to"

Sounds like Tejas delivery timelines.

Maybe wait and see and keep quiet till it is done, else you seem like a monkey jumping up and down making noise as you slowly lose market share....
That is an irrelevant analogy to the point of being idiotic. In this case, one person, namely Modi , has an active choice to make. He does not care about a few percentage points of market share. If he makes a deal , he has to be able to sell it as a win to the Indian people. Agreeing to a rate higher than Pakistan's would be political suicide for him. He would rather play the hero fighting a heroic resistance against American hegemony. India is a not a de facto military state. Modi needs public opinion on his side.

In terms of probabilities, I would say the chances of a rate better than Pakistan's are 60%, same as Pakistan is 19%, higher than Pakistan is 1% ( because never say never) and no deal is 20% .

The No Deal scenario would be an irritant, but India is not Vietnam. The economy will take a small hit and move on.

You are being greedy for sure. You are offering something whose existence is not confirmed (access to your oil reserves), while you have been something which is confirmed (19% v/s 25%).

Yes.
Plus Pakistan is NOT recognizing Israel as he claimed. But I know where he coming from and it has everything to do with Pakistan's domestic politics and they never miss a chance to bring in that angle in every thread!
Pathetic!

Speaking Of Oil, Back In The Early Days Of PDF There Was Talk Of Six Trillion Barrels Oil In Balchistan Coast

I see. We dont have any such in UK, perhaps in EU.

So what you are referring to is basically "assembling" Apple phones and back to US.

Keep an eye on this though. Orange man is not happy about this.

Yes, it is essentially assembling iPhones. An increasing number of Apple suppliers are moving to India to support the assembly line, though the chips are still imported. The hope is that the higher end parts of the supply chain will move to India over time, but it is just a hope as of now.

As of now, almost all of the exports out of India are to the US because of the China situation. Maybe with the UK FTA, some of them may end up in the UK, especially if India does not negotiate a better deal with the US.

Trump is not happy about any manufacturing outside the US, but how many American voters will be willing to pay 3-4 thousand dollars for a fully Made in America iPhone ?

That is over simplistic to the point of being stupid. It is like saying that a mouse and elephant are the same because they are both ANIMALS.

Until the British drew up the McMahon Line, most of the territory disputed with China was never under the rule of a power ruling in what is the modern Indian heartland. The people living there are still not mainstream and many ignorant Indians refer to them as Chinkies. Also, while that land is now strategically important, it is not and has never been very economically productive . Both the Indian and Chinese governments provide massive subsidies in the disputed regions and their vicinity. The situation is very different in Kashmir, which was ruled by the Dogras and Sikhs and was a Hindu region before the Islamic consequent.

The Hindu nationalists have always seen Islam as the existentialist theat. The Chinese have no place in their history or mythology.

It is true that China is substantially stronger than India militarily and economically, but it is also true that most of the Han Chinese economic, cultural and political centres are in the east. Their historical sphere of influence and current military focus is in the east towards Taiwan, the Koreas , Japan and South East Asia . India is mostly just an irritant on the other side of the Himalayas for them. Likewise, given the the relative military capacity of China and Pakistan, India is disproportionately focussed on Pakistan. There are bitter memories from 1962, anger at Chinese support for Pakistan and resentment and jealousy at how much China outpaced India since Deng opened up the economy, but there is no fundamental civilisational quarrel. Many Indians are obsessed with Pakistan. Very few have interest in China. Hundreds of Pakistanis are household names in India. Many Indians would not be able to name a single Chinese. If this were Chinese Defence Forum, you would have found hardly any Indians here .

Bottom line is, there is a pizza pie, "ALL Vegetables" right now, being sold at your neighboring country worth at least $ 10-15 billion a year that you can have (our growth journey with trade, minerals, etc). You can act smart, sign a no war pact, become involved with the trade and join the CPEC.

Or, you let the pie be shared between the three great powers, the USA, China and Russia. The seller of the Pie (Pakistan) will grow it's economy and move on.

YOU, took the loss. Just like 7-0 in May. The choice is yours!

@Samlee @RajaBaja @Baibers_1260

I have a somewhat contrary view about your opinion on the trillions of dollars of RE minerals in PAK. Are you guys brave enough to hear it?

Regards

I don't hear "opinions". I trust digital exploration studies, sample Ore reports and digital mappings that show us on a monitor where, what is, and estimated how much. We aren't in 1944, post world war II era. This is 2025.

But it's free speech forum. How can I stop you from giving your opinion?

How has joining the CPEC worked for you?
