Indians know it too, they will blackmail USA, just watch!

This has been one of the topmost news at NY Times last few days.
A part of me wants to admire India for taking a stand. They were more than tacitly approved by America to buy the Russian oil after the Ukraine war started but something has changed now.

  • Trade war: President Trump said on Tuesday that he would impose higher tariffs on India in the next 24 hours, a day after warning that he would “substantially” increase the 25 percent levy the United States has already imposed on Indian goods. Mr. Trump has ratcheted up pressure on India over its purchases of Russian oil. The Indian government has said the president’s targeting of it was “unjustified and unreasonable.”

India's Russia and Iran ties in the spotlight

India is now the biggest buyer of Russian crude oil by volume, according to data from Finland-based think tank the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

Approximately 35%-40% of Indian oil imports come from Russia, up from just 3% in 2021, the year before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

While the West has looked to cut ties with Moscow, India has not joined Western sanctions against Russia.

Senior Indian officials and the Ministry of External Affairs have repeatedly stated that India's "steady and time-tested partnership" with Russia is not negotiable and will not be subject to outside pressure.

Trump has also justified the tariffs by pointing to India's ongoing trade with Iran, which has also been hit by Western sanctions over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

Shanthie Mariet D'Souza, president of Mantraya, an independent research forum, said American policy "appears to be an expression of [Trump's] frustration to solve the Ukraine war and to pressure Iran."

"It also clashes directly with India's policy of strategic autonomy," she told DW.

D'Souza also cast doubt on whether Trump's aggressive approach will help resolve the situation, stressing that he risks alienating a willing and trustworthy partner in India.

Sovereign countries must independently choose trade partners — Kremlin on India

Dmitry Peskov said this also concerns determining those modes of trade and economic cooperation that suit the interests of a certain country

MOSCOW, August 5. /TASS/. Sovereign countries have the right to select their partners in trade and economic cooperation based on their own interests, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, commenting on the US’ threats regarding India.

"We believe that sovereign countries must have and do have the right to choose their trade partners, the partners in trade and economic cooperation, on their own and independently determine those modes of trade and economic cooperation that suit the interests of a country in question," Peskov said.

I have repeatedly said here that Trump is a bully and like every bully, the more you give them the more they'd want. And he perhaps rightly sees India with fewer options then were available just a few months ago; and he and MAGA don't respect losers, which India must appear to them after the May 2025 conflict against Pakistan. He is going to keep asking for more and more, you know 'Do More'. Pakistanis know that all too well.
It is up to India to decide but without a strong, reliable ally like China which Pakistan has, Indian diplomatic position is vulnerable. All the UNSC P-5 must know that India is vulnerable to UNSC Resolutions over the Indus Water Treaty or even over Kashmir. India could keep obliging them by giving concessions and they could, like true hyenas, want even more. Even Russia is not the same with India and part of that is because of India's policies since the Modi regime came to power 10 years ago and part of that because Russia's dependence on China.

I am sorry—completely irrelevant to this Trump trade episode..

I am sorry—completely irrelevant to this Trump trade episode..

Absolutely relevant! From F35 sales to India to Tariffs on India to the Kashmir dispute where both Trump/Rubio have publicly (even if fake) willingness to help with---they know what they are doing and when they sit together and discuss $$ and strategies, they know what cards to play with.

maybe he will follow past treatment of Indian diplomats and give them some cavity treatment. Remember that Indian diplomat that got checked out

WASHINGTON: Senior Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, arrested in New York on charges of visa fraud, was put through both strip and cavity searches, procedures normally used for criminals.

Again! You are wrong! Let me be clear—if India was negotiating an F-35 deal with the USA, story would be completely different.

Pakistan and China are completely irrelevant in this episode. Yeah, but with some part of that incident includes not what you're saying—it's all about Modi not accepting any role of Trump for a ceasefire, which Trump is claiming. If Modi has accepted, not even a few % would be added because Pakistan is completely irrelevant in this. you adding china, pakistan and kashmir... not sure why!

========================================
Anyway, let me give a simple example of how international politics and relationships work:

- In the SCO example, India wanted to mention a specific incident (likely terrorism-related in happened, India), but China blocked it.

- Russia didn’t push for or sign the final agreement—this is a diplomatic balancing act.

This means that Russia knows it cannot afford to alienate either. This neutrality is a diplomatic tool to preserve relationships.

Selective Cooperation by China

In BRICS, the condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack was issued, and China did not block it.

So China played the game very well.

Everything is connected. Americans are experts in using pressure and weak points.
But, okay, India is totally free to defy Trump. Something not even Netanyahu dares. We will know before long the good and bad out of this tussle between Modi and Trump. My guess is that Trump can punish India more than vice versa--far more.
