Trump ramps up tariff on India to 50pc with additional 25pc hike

United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on India for continued purchases of Russian oil amid the Ukraine war, taking the total tariff imposition to 50pc.

In an executive order issued from the White House, Trump said: “I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil.

“Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25pc.”
Pakistan can start producing anything and everything they can.

Sab maal bik jayega with this 31% tariff edge over India.

It is okay, bro. Pakistan and India should also trade.

Abhi picture baaki hai dosto.

This coercion is unlikely to work with India. Thats my assessment.
Not that India would launch any offensive by putting counter tariffs but, it is unlikely to accept the US terms for the trade and tariff deal.

So if the only major point of dispute is importing russian oil - with the 50% tarrif - is it still worth continuing the usual business with russians? I mean from a purely business point of view -- keeping aside the ideas of "showing a spine" and "not letting US decide our foreign policy".

Trump will probably reverse the tariff increase after Modi comes back to earth. right now, it is a tit for tat. I am convinced that Modi will be forced to bow down. No chance that India can win this contest. Remember that India has enjoyed enormous growth due to US preferential treatment.

The irony is that Indians used to lecture Pakistan not to agitate papa America. The US would punish Pakistan. Pakistan wouldn't be able to recover from US punishment. I guess the roles have reversed today. I expect the paid content writers and Zionists to throw fits and defend India.

A very valid question.
Planners in Delhi must have worked out the math and I don’t think that it would be too difficult to calculate.
There are two aspects of Russian oil.
First one is that, it meets Indian energy demand at a lower price compared to what we were getting from the usual sources -mainly Middle East.
Second is that, India was importing and selling the refined Russian oil and making good money.
Last year India exported approx $86 billion. India was Sen I’d largest exporter of refined oil in the world.

Even if India stops buying Russian oil, it would be bought by China. Exactly same thing happened with Iranian oil. All that is going to China now. Would Russia loose money if India stops? No, till China keeps showing two fingers to DT.

India can’t go on a path of full confrontation either. Considering many other nations in a similar situation, there is a possibility of some kind of mutual understanding with these nations to blunt the edge of this Trump offensive.
Main countries that seem to take part are Canada, Brazil and China.

I am at wits end to understand the nuances as this is developing by the hour.
Let’s see, what is Delhi’s response. It can’t be seen to capitulate as that would be bad optics for a country of India’s size.
Would wait and see, how it pans out.
