The number of fighter jets in Usa inventory is alot less. Usa has around 1700 4th and 5th generation fighter jets in its airforce, China also has around 1700 4th and 5th generation, so they're on par. Usa navy airforce is huge ofcourse but the reason is to project power all over the world. China still has catching up to do in that department.

Great point on Usa network of allies, this is the main reason Usa is ruling the world, they have Usa, Canada, EU, GCC, Australia, Japan, S Korea, Israel. All work in collaboration to rule the world. People often look pass GCC, it's the biggest Usa and Israeli ally with trillions, oil, gas, they fight to control the Muslim world and make them submit to Usa and Israeli dominance.

China must build its own network of allies with interests aligned. Not to confront the west world order but to survive, so far everyone is getting toppled one by one. Iraq, Syria, Libya all finished, Russia and Iran being targeted.

True but if Usa China fight, it will be Usa Canada EU GCC Japan S Korea Australia, Israel and eventually even India fighting China, not just militarily but economy, trade, sanctions, isolation. Similar to what is happening with Russia. If World War starts the current inventory will not matter, will China or Usa and allies be able to reproduce the weapons quickly and protect their economy to fund war. China is still decades away from being a truely dominant world power (if it ever happens). More likely scenario, China will continue to mind its own business like now, Usa will not harm China and China the same, they will continue to trade and live together as powers. But Usa Israel will never ever allow any real threat to emerge, they want to rule the world without any real opposition.

The US doesn't disclose its assets in public. But I can explain per public details. There are active combat 4.5 and 5th generation jets around 1800 just in the USAF. Add US Navy, another 800-1000 jets and add Marine Core, near 500 jets I checked the last time. That's active duty 3000-3500 jets and these are estimates. The real number is around 5000 per some analysts who track these trends.

Next, the US retires a % of its jets early to keep reserves for a WWIII scenario. You can do some search on ARMAG of the "bone yard", where they even keep the Pakistani F-16's and AH-1Z's never flown. So this "retirement house" keeps nearly 5000 aircrafts, majority of which are 4th gen or +.

Add Japan, EU, UK, Philippine, Australia and other nations combat jets also, who will join the US in a war with China. That's why, for China to be a peer, it needs 4000-5000 jets, ideally 5th gen stealth heavy ratio.

I surely don't know, but based on China's unrivaled industrial might across all industries, everything is possible, making planes is a job involving dozens of industries for supply chains of various levels.

Quality over quantity. This is where the US is unmatched. China can produce all the jets it wants, but the US will retain the qualitative edge for at least a generation to come. The F-22, B-2 etc are all products of the 1970s/1980s and there’s no equivalent system anywhere in the world. Even today, China is incapable of matching the technology of the F-22 & B-2 bombers, technology that’s decades old.

Can china produce 2000 5th generation jets, 100%. But will they ? Do they really feel the need for these much 5th generation jets when they already testing 6th generation jets ? That's the main question.

What are sentiments in common Chinese ? Do they want a bigger Air force to counter USA or a modest one just to fulfill needs of China ? That's my main question from Chinese members here.

I can only reply this part, Chinese general population now are more assertive and combative, this sentiment has been massively boosted by China's fast increasing industrial strength and Xi's more hardline foreign policy. The era of playing Mr.Nice Guy had long been gone for good.

But the problem is the US cannot commit, say, 3000 planes in East Asia because it has other commitments too. What would happen to Europe if you emptied it of planes? Russia will just walk unopposed into Ukraine. How about the Middle East? Can Israel alone handle Iran? Not likely based on the recent war. So those numbers are not real. Beside the Ukraine war shows the lethality of IAD, where jet fighters are very vulnerable to AD missiles and only use sparingly to launch stand-off weapons, forget about WWII-style dogfights etc.

Besides, when it comes to push to shove, China will easily outproduce the West. Forget about Japan and Korea; they will never want to get involved in a war with China because that will result in their destruction. They are not dumb. In fact, now they question the whole security arrangement with the US. China has quite a number of 5th-generation fighters now. Let's see just off the back 500 J-10 all varieties.400 J 16, 400 J 20, 200 J11B, 350 J11A, Su 27, Su 30 etc, 200 JH7, 125 J15 SO ROUGHLY MORE THAN 2000 MODERN FIGHTERS.

Number alone doesn't tell the story. Logistics, production capacities, etc, will determine the outcome of a war. At the onset of WWII, Japan had 10 AC carriers vs 3 for the US. Now, what is the result of the Midway fight? The US just outproduced Japan to win World War WWII
