While both the men involved showed an extreme example of bravery and I have the utmost respect for their service and sacrifice, and I know I’m writing this sitting in the safety of my home without a full understanding of on ground realities - watching the video where it all happens did not make me feel proud or impressed, it made me feel angry. I hope I’m missing a good deal of context and someone will prove me wrong here but this seems like such an avoidable loss;Eagle Eye

Indeed it was a shitshow. Turret Gunner was brain dead. I don't know if he knows that he's manning a 12.7. It'll go through the very corner that terrorist was taking cover behind before making a last charge at them. While both the men involved showed an extreme example of bravery and I have the utmost respect for their service and sacrifice, and I know I’m writing this sitting in the safety of my home without a full understanding of on ground realities - watching the video where it all happens did not make me feel proud or impressed, it made me feel angry. I’m sorry for my language but what the **** was everyone doing? You have a causality in the open, one guy is tending to him, there’s two teams of at least 2 (probably more) commandoes who are not providing cover for the casualty at all, there seems to be no rush at all in trying to get the casualty to a better location, the guy manning the MG on the MRAP very clearly sees and shoots at the terrorist when he peeks from behind the wall first but then completely seems to ignore him as he rushes the two men.
I am not an expert but to me this feels and looks like a failure of communication, tactics and training, these guys are supposed to be the best of the best, how did they let that guy walk the several meters upto the two men, shoot them, and only then get engaged?
I understand no two situations are the same and these guys are getting shot at, where all thinking goes out the window, but if these guys weren’t SSG I wouldn’t be holding them to this standard, these are exactly the people who are supposed to have the training to not make bad decisions during a firefight, look at any video of how American SF in Afghanistan react to a casualty under fire.
Again, I really hope I’m missing a bunch of context, but as it stands the video made my blood boil with how everyone’s just standing there idly and is so afraid to peek around cover to make sure they aren’t getting rushed. Nobody is holding an angle or a line of fire, this would be slightly understandable if they didn’t know which direction the enemy was in, but they clearly do and even spot him, did the guy in the turret not communicate this to others? Why did the one guy break all cover and ignore basic logic and training to try and tend to the casualty without making sure he was covered? Even if he thought he was covered, why wasn’t he actually covered by the rest of the team? If there were really 21 hostages in the compound, why is there absolutely no urgency in their actions? It is standard practice for hostage takers to start shooting hostages when the rescuers start their OP.
This looked like an utter shitshow to me.
There is so much more wrong with the entire scenario I could spend an hour pointing out all the mistakes and oversights, if they don’t use this as a learning opportunity then I’m sorry but I better not hear the SSG described as one of the “best trained special forces” or whatever the hell else again. They failed at the most basic of things here.Indeed it was a shitshow. Turret Gunner was brain dead. I don't know if he knows that he's manning a 12.7. Now if someone argument is he didn't know what was behind that wall, at least you can suppress that corner. Make him duck behind cover. Bring that shield up drag casualties back to cover.
And what was the point of having a drone up? To get a HD view of enemy shooting your teammates point blank.
I don't know the circumstances but, the wounded guys on the ground. What's with hugging your buddy? If you have strength to hug him and lay on top of him to cover him, you probably have the strength to grab your rifle. Still you you lay on him and have rifle to protect yourself.
That lone TS was more ballsy then some of our finest with all the gear/armour and training.
The whole point of to get the drone up is to recce the area and give the real time info to soldier on ground, but there is a huge communication gap btw soldiers i wont be surprised if they were relying only on radios mounted on their shoulders, which are no use when your hands are busy. SSG have comtacs but in very limited numbers which is very basic equipment in modern warfare. Honestly our elite soldiers are very underequipped.....And what was the point of having a drone up?
