The exception was one of many "pivot to Asia" era policies where India managed to sell the US an idea that tilting the balance of power towards India in south Asia was is in US interest. Pakistan Iran gas pipeline was banned but India was allowed to access Afghanistan and centra Asia through iran. Pakistan's F-16 and Ah-1Z programs were frozen and India given it's pick in the armory. As if that was going to get Pakistan to do what US wanted in Afghanistan.
Moeed Yusuf recent article mentioned the same imbalance. That it did the opposite. India remained focused on Pakistan instead of "containing" china as Washington wanted while Pakistan also doubled down in Afghanistan and deepened it's relationship with China.
No more preferencial treatment it seems until unless India actually aligns with the US on Russia and China. Which isnt something India can do considering how woven their military hardwares, logistic are in case of Russia and how trade china India actually have.

10 years ago I was absolutely gobsmacked and couldn't believe what I was witnessing.
India was getting a free pass for everything and Pakistan pulled up for every little thing.
I wondered how is India getting away with this. They even blamed Pakistans deaths by terorrism on Pakistan meanwhile India were funding proxies in Afghanistan, Iran and conducting assasinations in Pakistan.
Now we realise it was an attempt to collapse Pakistan, a dream India had sold to Iran, Afghanistan and anyone else that wanted to listen.
