Bangladesh plans $2.2b purchase of 20 Chinese J-10 fighter jets

Congrats to Bangladesh for attaining J10C craft , their airforce need CPR

Nation with 200 Million plus population and mediocre airforce

The upgrade is must , also JF17 would be nice to fly in Bangladeshi Airforce in near future

Rest assured US personnel will be very interested in the pl15s found in May 25 inside India. Question now is whether paf will oblige them with Chinese strategy. Is that a real concern for the Chinese?do you think?

How's the airbases doing? All repairs done?heard Nur Khan base is still out of order.
Please stop peddling your propaganda and get lost

Agree.

In addition to this - I think the F7 crash in the school resulting in multiple children casualty also may have played a part to expedite the procurement and retire the older jets promptly. BAFs old inventory got a lot of negative media coverage in that accident.
Could be. People weren't quiet in criticising the shit out of airforce and the airforce chief.

This is a very important question. The military is currently undergoing many changes as we speak starting with cutting the extra "fat" accumulated over the last 15 years. With this potential purchase, there are still many items pending to make it a truly effective force. There are also talks about acquiring the Eurofighter Typhoon which leaves me scratching my head as to why would they do this(?) It makes little sense to me.

That said, there are still many pro-Indian, pro-BAL dalals within Bangladesh's bureaucracy and civil society. Some are closet supporters and even agents. And last but not least, the Bangladeshi media entertainment industry; which has close ties in India. And we all know the role that India's media industry plays. The episode involving a little-known Bangladeshi model trying to honeytrap a Saudi diplomat for sensitive/confidential information shows this vulnerability.

The elite of the old who were 100% responsible for solidifying the BAL rule are still very much present and active to varying degrees. The war against the BAL and their Indian deep state allies is still far from over.
EFT plans lacked foundation from day 1... if india okay'd it then it would have been one of the biggest way to plunder money for previous awami government as it had been with mig 29s but it's good they were India's lapsog afterall. There's no way we could have kept flying them reasonably amongst all our fighter pilots

Imagine the Bangladesh Air Force in 2030 equipped with Chinese weapons:
36 J-10C fighter jets.
2 KJ-500/KJ-600 early warning aircraft.
24 Rainbow drones.
12 Z-10/Z-19 attack helicopters.
4 HQ-22 air defense missile systems.
6 HQ-16 air defense missile systems.

I would have loved the Eurofighter for BAF but with J10 acquisition now in full swing I think that proposition is dead. What would be the point?

BAF probably will look at JF17 as part of the hi-low mix

That’s an impressive wishlist.
As for early warning aircraft from my understanding only major military powers have them. Those planes are very expensive and you need a reason why you need them.

that list will never materialise, be under no illusions on that.

Until you see a contract signing ceremony with Bangladesh, you should assume the J10CE procurement is fake news!!!

I'm with you on this. I won't believe until I see them flying over BD sky.

They let us down many times in the past.

China has vast manufacturing capacity, CCP is rich, the Chinese are keen to sell more military hardware. if Bangladesh seeks loans. and keeps the military secret not leaking to, let say India, then I think it is realistic. Not all, but part of the wishlist is doable.

Bangladesh Finalizes Talks to Buy 20 Chinese J-10CE Fighter Jets Worth $2.2 Billion

Dhaka’s plan to acquire 20 J-10CE fighters from China marks a major leap in its air defense modernization — and a move that could shift regional power dynamics.

According to multiple diplomatic and media reports, Bangladesh is preparing to purchase 20 J-10CE multi-role fighter jets from China in a deal estimated at $2.2 billion.

The move signals a major leap in the nation’s air defense modernization — and a bold geopolitical shift that could reshape South Asia’s military balance.

Talks Between Bangladesh and China Gain Pace

The negotiations reportedly accelerated during the visit of Interim Government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to China in March, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Sources within Yunus’s delegation confirmed that Bangladesh’s interest in the J-10CE was officially presented during those discussions.

Beyond the fighter jet deal, the meeting also touched on key infrastructure projects such as the Teesta River development and port connectivity initiatives. However, diplomatic insiders note that initial talks on the J-10C acquisition had begun even before the visit, with Beijing responding positively to Dhaka’s proposal.

Why the J-10CE? The “Vigorous Dragon” Advantage

The Chengdu J-10CE, also known as the “Vigorous Dragon,” is China’s most advanced export-grade 4.5-generation multi-role fighter. Designed to rival platforms like the F-16V and Gripen E, and even challenge aspects of the F-35, it offers Bangladesh an affordable yet powerful air combat solution.

Key Highlights of the J-10CE:

  • KLJ-7A AESA Radar: Provides high situational awareness and advanced electronic warfare resistance.
  • PL-15 Long-Range Missiles: Capable of engaging targets beyond 200 km, comparable to the U.S. AIM-120D AMRAAM.
  • Multi-Role Flexibility: Performs air superiority, precision strike, and reconnaissance missions — and can coordinate with UAVs.
  • Cost-Effective: Priced between $60–90 million per unit, including training, spare parts, and weapons — a strong value compared to Western alternatives.

Strategic and Geopolitical Implications

If finalized, the deal will mark Bangladesh’s biggest-ever fighter jet acquisition, dramatically upgrading its air force capabilities. Defense analysts say the addition of the J-10CE would place the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) among the most modernized in South Asia.

However, this development is not without challenges. Western observers caution that closer military ties with Beijing could complicate Dhaka’s relations with the U.S. and European partners, who are wary of expanding Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific.

While Western nations maintain strong trade relations with Bangladesh, a deepening defense partnership with China could invite diplomatic scrutiny. Experts advise Dhaka to balance its strategic ambitions with the geopolitical sensitivities of the region.

Regional Context and Global Demand

Bangladesh’s potential J-10CE purchase follows reports that Iran is also eyeing the same aircraft for its air force — possibly for future operations in the Middle East. The growing global demand for the “Vigorous Dragon” underlines its appeal as a cost-effective, high-performance alternative to Western jets, especially for nations seeking independent defense supply chains.

For Bangladesh, the acquisition represents more than a military upgrade — it’s a statement of strategic autonomy. By investing in advanced Chinese fighters, Dhaka signals its intent to modernize on its own terms, even as it navigates the complex web of global power politics.

In summary:
If this deal goes through, Bangladesh’s air force could soon field one of the most capable fighter fleets in South Asia — powered by China’s cutting-edge technology and reshaping the region’s aerial balance for years to come.

Currently, there has been no official action on this news.

There are numerous rumors circulating, and one version warrants further scrutiny.

Earlier this year, Bangladesh approached CATIC with a request to purchase J-10CE fighter jets. However, they requested payment be made under a "PAF order for J-10CE fighter jets." That is, a small down payment would be made, followed by ten-year installments to CATIC for the order.

Based on an assessment of Bangladesh's economic situation and CATIC's own financial pressures, CATIC rejected this proposal. They demanded that Bangladesh increase the down payment to approximately 50%, which exceeds Bangladesh's current ability to pay.

Bangladesh then sought a second option, with the Export-Import Bank of China providing installment payments and guarantees. This option has been agreed upon in principle by all parties involved, but details are still under negotiation. It may involve the bank's other economic operations in Bangladesh.

It is said that this option also includes J-10S fighter jets.

According to yankeesama, the PL-15 is already an outdated technology, and even because its production method is too old (2010s technology), the latest PL-16 is cheaper to produce than the PL-15.
What is PL16 ? never heard of it before. After PL 15 it was PL 17.
Can anyone advice PL16 improvement over PL15 ?

The PL-16 is an improved version of the PL-15. We know little else about it except that it has folding wings. The J-20 and J-35 can carry six missiles in their bays.

The PL-17 is a completely different, ultra-long-range, large air-to-air missile. Currently, only the J-16 can carry it, and it's expected that the next-generation J-36 will be able to carry it internally in its bay.

Only issue here is the potential for RAW to penetrate BAF. Could compromise J-10 unless Chinese give them dumb version
