Can someone please clarify the difference between Pathan, Pashtoon and Pakhtoon?

What's the difference between Pashto and Dari? I am assuming Pashto is spoken in Pakistan and Dari in Afghanistan?

I am considering learning basic Pashto so I can understand what's being said in the videos that get viral on social media.

Thanks for pointing it out. I think the reason is so many of us are just frustrated with hearing this term again and again (mainly by westerners but even many of our own have internalized this narrative)

There is nothing special with Afghanistan or its people. Their country is a byproduct of the Great Game between the Russians and British.
Its a misnomer because of just how many invasions have passed into india from the west

Ceasefire for 48 hours

Perhaps not a good idea right now

I read at a few places that they want Ceasefire, so they can have talks.

One way would be to ask them to absolutely decapitate TTP and permanently stop any and all cooperation with India against Pakistan.

But yes, you never know these people, they can regroup, restock and start again after 48 hours.

I'm sure Pakistan will be keeping an eye on their movements and making sure they do not try anything during this time. If yes then they would definitely continue again.

I honestly do not have any high hopes from Taliban at all.

According to google...

"Pashtun" and "Pakhtun" are both correct spellings for the same ethnic group, with the difference being a dialectal variation
. "Pashtun" is used in southern regions like Kandahar, while "Pakhtun" is common in northern areas like Peshawar and Kabul. Other variations, such as "Pushtun" and "Pathan," are also used to refer to this group.

  • Pashtun: Used in southern dialects, often associated with the "sh" sound.
  • Pakhtun: Used in northern dialects, often associated with the "kh" sound.
  • Other variations: Other spellings and pronunciations include Pushtun and Pathan.
  • Usage: All are acceptable, but the choice may depend on the specific region or dialect being referenced

I think - pathan is like an urdu version of it?

Cease fire and find out, who speaks in favor (or bluntly, has an intention to support sleeper cells) of Talis

if silent,

keep bombing!

If any terror attack occurs in the next 48 hours Pakistan must level kabul. We need to stop pretending like we care for precision strikes. There are better targets for those weapons if we want to send the taliban a message large scale indiscriminate bombardment of any structure used by the regime must become the new normal

Maybe so, but bro - you know where responding to it is gonna lead.
Like so many of us, I am just tired of ultimately reading the same thing everywhere I click.
Your a sensible person, I'm appealing to your maturity, to help us all have a more pleasant experience.

I will say this and this is not domestic politics per se. I can clearly see for the last few years, there is an attempt to undermine the Pakistani security forces which is the main tool for a certain Pakistani political party. Every time there is a conflict, every time there is some act of terrorism in Pakistan, every engagement of General Asim Munir then some people come out with oh-not-so-hidden way to undermine the Pakistani security forces. Look at what I responded to above? Every time they do that to undermine the Pakistani security forces for Pakistan's domestic political reasons, they do so by following a certain narrative.
I am quite prickly about such things because I see the Pakistani security forces as the first, the last, and the only line of defense which Pakistan has. So while I appreciate your post, I hope you truly understand what I am saying and maybe you and others start to look closely at some patterns of posts by some members.

Glad that cease-fire was accepted. This has to be a hearts and mind war. Broadcasting why this occurred to the rest of Afghanistan will put a lot of pressure on the ruling Taliban. After-all, Muslims government tend to care deeply about the local street politics. The Bazaaris have suffered a lot and will place enormous pressure on the Taliban govt to shape up. War is never one dimensional. Many here want to drop a nuke on Kabul - but they are not the enemy - but a prize. The real enemy sits in the East. I want to see Pakistan bombing their temples and civilian targets and grant the dirty Indians their wish of seeing war up-close. Everything in the East is fair game.

For all the stupidity of the Afghans, we don't want to create a humanitarian crisis

Afghanistan collapsing doesn't help anyone

All drama

Within 24 hours ceasefire would not only be accepted but things would be back to normal without any real action against cavemen who beheaded our soldiers

Told you just a couple of hours ago that Pakistan would accept ceasefire

And imagine that this ceasefire was accepted just few hours after those b@stards mutilated our soldiers and made videos of them

This is shamelessness at its peak

and this ceasefire would prove to be a bad idea too. Telling you this too right now

Pakistan need to put up two clear demands

1.Never speak against Pakistan territorial integrity (durand line)

2.Ttp shoukd be removed and dissembled

N0.1 is important because thats what motivates no.2
If its all stupid hogwash talks accept them regrouping

Geography matters: The Soviets had a vested interest in turning Afghanistan into another 'Stan' and look at those 'Stans' now: Far better than Afghanistan. The Soviet soldiers actually did physical labor in stuff like building schools. They also were big on women education. The Americans.. after the initial goal of toppling the Taliban, stayed for the Military Industrial Complex.
I won't totally disagree with this. We built a fair number of schools and drilled wells as well.

Unfortunately, a lot of the money simply went unaccounted for. As it did in Iraq.
